Question of the Week
Q What can residents do to prevent flooding?

Spring weather has arrived and that can mean the increased chances of flooding due to snow melt and increased rain. You can take some simple steps to help prevent flooding by clearing debris from storm drains and sewers, diverting gutter downspouts into your lawn and directing your sump pump outside to your lawn.

Tour of Lake Ellyn
The Village is pleased to announce that Glen Ellyn will once again be host to the Intelligentsia Cup Bike Race for a second year in a row.  Under the new name, the Tour of Lake Ellyn, the event will happen on
Saturday, July 15 on the same challenging course around picturesque Lake Ellyn.

"We're very excited to bring the bike race back to Glen Ellyn, which is being led by a community effort," said Ben Raby, a former professional cyclist and member of the local
organizing committee. "The Tour of Lake Ellyn will promote Glen Ellyn community and enjoyment of our great park. In collaboration with the park district and village staff we've
been able to secure a unique and challenging course, giving spectators the opportunity to watch elite racers navigate the ups, downs and turns of the Lake Ellyn circuit."

Racing will again happen all day long, ranging from amateur and age group categories to the marquee elite and professional men and women races. A change for this year is a two-lap Glen Ellyn Community Fun Ride where anyone with a bicycle and helmet are invited to ride the same course as the racers, in between the pro women and pro men events. More information about the event will be forthcoming.

Glen Ellyn takes pride on being a bicycle friendly community and has taken a number of steps including:

Bike Repair Station
The Illinois Prairie Path is home to a bike repair station found in Prairie Path Park. This is the only bicycle repair stand found on the Prairie Path.

Bike to Metra
Available at the train station and Civic Center is a Bike to Metra brochure and map. It's an excellent guide to bicycle commuting to and from the Glen Ellyn Metra station. It offers suggestions on securing your bike, staying safe and also provides a convenient map of the Glen Ellyn area.

Bike Safety Month
June is Bike Safety Month and the Chicago area Bike to Work Week. The Village encourages its residents to join the movement by dusting off their bikes and learning new skills to be a safe cyclist.
DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM) Partners with DuPage County for New 9-1-1 Facility
At a special call meeting on February 15, the DU-COMM Board of Directors voted unanimously to enter into an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) and lease with DuPage County and the DuPage Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB) for a new state-of-the-art communications facility on the west side of the
DuPage County campus.

DU-COMM is an intergovernmental agency formed in 1975 to provide public safety communications services to Police, Fire, and EMS agencies.  Today, DU-COMM serves 45 agencies in DuPage County, including Glen Ellyn, and is one of the largest consolidated 9-1-1 centers in Illinois.  In 2015 DU-COMM processed over 1.1 million phone calls and over 600,000 police and Fire/EMS incidents.

The new facility will be a combination of renovated space on the county campus, and new construction. DU-COMM will co-locate with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the DuPage ETSB offices on this site. The new construction will be a hardened 9-1-1 Public Safety Communications Center
to address the need for a larger facility for DU-COMM employees and operations. Due to growth and expansion related to consolidation of 9-1-1 centers in DuPage County, DU-COMM grew from 27 member agencies to forty-five (45) agencies in the last eight years.

The project is estimated to be complete by the fall of 2018. At that time, DU-COMM will move operations to the new facility. The relocation will represent a "coming home" of sorts. In 1975, DU-COMM began operations on the County campus before moving to its current location in 1995.

Invite Nature Into Your Neighborhood
If you would like to bring nature closer to yourself and your family, don't miss this free workshop, "Invite Nature Into Your Neighborhood", planned for Wednesday, March 15th from 7pm to 9pm  at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center!

By making simple changes in your yard, you can make it more beautiful and improve its functionality.  The use of rain barrels, rain gardens and native plants all help reduce stormwater runoff, create habitat for pollinators and other wildlife, and enrich your soil.  If you employ even some of the tecnhiques you will learn about at this workshop, you'll be well on your way to qualifying for certification through The Conservation Foundation's Conservation@Home program! You'll be contributing to the health of the environment for the benefit of all, and you should be recognized for your efforts!

Registration for this workshop is requested but not required.  All pre-registered guests will receive a "How-To" Natural Landscaping Guide.
