to join Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Chief Development Officer Bob Gilbert for a VICA After Dark. With over 40 years of experience in aviation, Gilbert leads LAWA's capital program, where he coordinates the modernization and improvement programs with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Gilbert spoke to attendees about his responsibilities at LAX and efforts to involve the business community in the decision making process of projects at the airport. Gilbert said, "We want to make sure when the Olympics return to Los Angeles, that we are friendly to our neighbors." Renovations at LAX are among the largest infrastructure projects in the nation. Gilbert said he wants to reach out to business at this key moment. His office will soon start meeting one-on-one with small businesses to discuss how they can work together for the renovations at LAX and how to best prepare for the Olympics. Gilbert emphasized this by saying, "We are on the threshold of making LAX the gold standard for the U.S. and the world. I am proud to be here for that."

Undemocratic Bill Will Increase Property Fees Without Voter Approval
|
Senate Bill 231 (Hertzberg) would redefine "sewer" for the purpose of Proposition 218 to include stormwater services, resulting in stormwater service-related fees being exempt from voter approval requirements. SB 231 would allow local governments to enact higher property fees and taxes for stormwater-related projects without seeking voter approval. This bill is an undemocratic attempt to bypass the will of the voters and undermines the intent of Proposition 218. SB 231 would significantly impact property owners with new charges potentially costing them thousands of dollars each year. The cost is considerable and should not be passed on to property owners who already pay significant fees and taxes. VICA recognizes the importance of stormwater capture and drought preparedness, but this bill goes too far by infringing on Californians' rights under Proposition 218.
Urge Governor Brown to VETO SB 231, an undemocratic bill that would significantly impact property owners.

21st Century Transportation System For San Fernando Valley |
Metro
is evaluating the feasibility of a major mass transit project that would operate along Van Nuys Blvd and San Fernando Rd from the Van Nuys Metro Orange Line Station to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink station.
Currently, there are two alternatives for dedicated bus rapid transit service and two for rail service.
VICA and the
Valley Coalition for Transit
strongly support light rail transit with 14 stations.
The East San Fernando Valley Transit Corridor runs through some of the most transit dependent and majority-minority communities in L.A. County. Current bus lines along the corridor are the most heavily used in the Valley after the Orange Line and among the top ten in the county.
The Valley cannot accept another underbuilt project that does not meet demand
. Light rail transit has the highest ridership capacity among the alternatives, and provides the best connectivity time to the Orange Line and future Sepulveda Pass Corridor project.
Let Metro know that Light Rail Transit is the preferred option of Valley businesses for the East San Fernando Valley Transit Corridor
.
