Broward County Public Schools has a long history utilizing videoconferencing and mobile technologies to enhance teaching and learning. This session will showcase some of these unique learning experiences and demonstrate how its implementation has changed the classroom landscape by exposing students and teachers to content that incorporate a global perspective.

Online Facilitation - Situational Coaching/Mentoring to Reduce Transactional Distance

Online students need support to be successful. Facilitators have to do more to cover the transactional distance of an online class. Situational coaching and mentoring reduces the gap by supporting students as they present individual needs and work to become self-directed and independent learners. This session will also discuss professional development plans that K-12 schools, colleges, and single departments can initiate to help instructors understand this process, create student orientations, provide materials, and assess student growth. This presentation will share the results of a pilot project using the PANOPTO lecture capture tool to increase learning at a mid-sized university. This session will include a brief introduction to lecture capture, a demonstration of the technology, a description of the methods used, and the project results.

Through the use of technology, Empire State College has effectively linked theory, research and practice to foster transformative learning in online and blended study environments. The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate how transformative learning has been achieved in online and blended study environments of adult students through the use of current, relative Web 2.0 and Social Media technologies. Participants of this presentation will be given the history and development of transformative learning theory, findings of quantitative and qualitative research, examples of assignments, rubrics for assessment, student outcomes, student feedback, and criteria for selecting and implementing appropriate technologies to foster transformative learning in online and blended study environments.
