Butterflies are amazing creatures in so many ways - their vibrant colors, their different shapes,  sizes and patterns and the important roles they play in nature's web of life. The Virginia Living Museum will celebrate the wonderful lives of butterflies with special exhibits, live butterflies, crafts and games with special display from The Butterfly Society of Virginia .   

Time: Activities 10am - 3pm
Cost: included in museum admission.

Free star gazing beginning at sunset (weather permitting) with telescopes set up on the grounds and staff astronomers ready to help visitors identify objects in the night sky.

The evening also includes a planetarium program and several laser shows. Shows are $3 for VLM members, $6 for non-members. Double features are $5 for VLM members and $10 for non-members.

The  Wild Side Café is open on Star Party nights from 6-8:30pm
Dino on the Loose

Join our walking T-Rex for a 15 minute dinosaur parade, photo ops and a roaring good time on the Dinosaur Discovery Trail!

Red Wolf Awareness Week

Night of the Living Museum
 October 20 and Saturday, Oct. 21 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is a non-scary Halloween event for families with kids ages 12 and under.  Come dressed as your favorite character or wild animal. Trick-or-treat throughout the museum as you walk through themed galleries filled with characters and themed decorations!

*  a nighttime hike on the boardwalk (weather permitting)

The Wild Side Café and the Wild Things Museum Store will be open all evening.

Ages: Children ages 2 and  under are free. Children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The museum will close at 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 21 to prepare for the evening event.

Make a "Play Date" with your little naturalist! There is no

better way to connect to your child and to nature than with this new interactive outdoor program for children ages 4-10.  Play Date activities will pair students with parent/guardians for activities that will focus on a variety of nature-based themes. Ponder the possibilities of pond life, life on a log, colors, shapes and textures of nature, and more!

Cost: Free. Play Date Field Trips require registration.

Excitement continues to build for Giant LEGO®  brick sculptures, designed by Brooklyn artist Sean Kenney.  16 nature themed sculptures combine nature and art in  an award-winning exhibition created  with over a half million LEGO®  bricks.
