Helpful Paws, Extraordinary Dogs Apr 8 
10am-3pm
Celebrate the bonds of companionship and service that are part of our special relationship with dogs. Meet dogs (and people) from the Tidewater Chapter of Pets for Vets, whose mission is to unite deserving veterans with specially trained dogs rescued from shelters. Members of the Newport News K-9 Unit will demonstrate how these highly trained dogs help keep our police officers and communities safe. Merrimac Dog Training Club and Canine Companions for Independence will demonstrate training, and Tail Waggin' Tutors' therapy dogs will show how they help children improve their reading skills. 
Military Child Weekend Apr 8-9
In a salute to military families, the Virginia Living Museum offers half price admission for the children of those who give their all. Children ages 3-12 will receive half price admission ($7.50) with a paying adult showing valid military ID the weekend of April 8-9. Military families purchasing a membership at the Museum will receive a 20% discount (double the usual 10% discount), and military families will receive a 10% discount in the Wild Things Museum Store . These discounts are in recognition of Military Child Month.

Our April 8 Star Party and Laser Light Shows have a special focus! Join us to learn how to prepare for the upcoming total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

Saturday Night Star Parties at the VLM begin with free observing at sunset on the second Saturday of every month. Star gazing is weather dependent. Telescopes are set up on the grounds and staff astronomers are available to help visitors identify objects in the night sky.  The evening continues with a planetarium program with laser light shows. 

Stargazing begins at sunset - FREE.

Naturally Speaking  - Adult Educational Series
Apr 18 - Salt Marshes, Ghost Forests, & Sea Level Rise
6:30-8 pm
Join Dr. Matt Kirwan, Assistant Professor at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, to learn about how salt marshes and coastal forests are faring in the Chesapeake region and beyond.  No fee, but   register in advance .

Spring Native Plant Sale 
Member Preview Sale Apr 20 4-6pm
Open to All Apr 22-23 & 29-30 9am-4pm

Choose from an incredible array of beautiful and unusual native plants for a variety of garden sites and styles, from wet ponds to dry rock gardens. VLM horticulture staff can answer questions and discuss the wildlife benefits of native plants. Admission to the sale is free, and it will be held in the Conservation Garden rain or shine.
Earth Day April 22 
Celebrate Earth Day at the VLM! Observe the animals as they receive toys, treats and other enrichment activities to stimulate natural behaviors. Learn more about protecting our environment and taking conservation measures. Earth-friendly vendors will show and sell green wares. There will also be crafts, eco-friendly giveaways, thousands of native plants for sale and earth-friendly animal shows. Plus, bring your batteries, cell phones and old sneakers for recycling.

Wolf to Woof: The Story of Dogs
Open Daily through May 14

This exhibit sniffs out the facts about dogs and explores what makes the human/dog relationship so unique. Through multimedia displays, dioramas and interactive stations, visitors can learn about the different types of dogs, how they are related to wolves and how they help humans.
