Letter from the PTA Presidents
Welcome to Fall at VL! So many of our great fall events are happening, even if the weather still feels like summer. We had a great turn out at VL Homecoming. Thanks to Alicia and Amanda for coordinating all of the fun activities and volunteers. The bubbles were a fun addition! Thank you to the following volunteers who have set up or completed their committees for the year:

  • Allison Jellison for taking care of School Kidz.
  • Kathy Veendendaal for Room Reps-bilingual classroom reps still needed!
  • Stacey O'Keefe for Assemblies-the students already enjoyed the first assembly and had fun learning about character building.
  • Thea Ayyad for Charleston Wrap-we exceeded our fundraising goal, so thanks to everyone who ordered!
  • Rachel Stevens for School Pictures-thanks for making sure everything ran smoothly.
  • Jenn Schiavone and Betsy Gates-Ehlers for Calendars-we appreciate all of your hard work.
  • Lesley Fletcher for Membership-thanks for everyone who signed up so far! It's still not too late to become a member.
  • Lydia Steinbach for Direct Donations-it's over budget! Don't forget, all donations are tax-deductible!
  • Maria Hall for our Walk to School Day-everyone had fun walking, riding, and dancing into school!
  • Erika Dix for putting together this fun and informative newsletter! Also, for the ongoing beautiful bulletin boards.

We ran our first Dine N Share at Photo's and it was a success! Don't forget our next Dine N Share is Tuesday, October 3rd at Chipotle on Dundee Road. Please see the flier for more information, and this is a big fundraiser as we get back 50% of all sales! These are an important part of our fundraising activities, so please attend if you are able.

Please reach out to Rachel or Mindy if you may have an interest in becoming a PTA Board Member or running a Committee next year. For 2018-2019, we will have the following Board positions that need to be filled: VP Room Reps, Secretary and Treasurer. Other Committee positions that need to be filled: Directory, SPARK, Bulletin Boards, and VL Reporter/Newsletter.

We are looking forward to a fun fall at VL!

Seifert's Spot
A note from Mrs. Seifert, Principal…
Hello VL Parents,

Welcome to fall! The school year is up and running. Kids are settling in nicely, and we are off to a great start.

As I sit and reflect on the last month of school, I can only look back with a smile. It has been such a pleasure to watch students and teachers build new relationships. There is nothing that brings more joy to my day then to watch students enter the building in the morning. Each day they come in with a renewed sense of excitement and energy. I often wish I could channel their energy in my direction. As they are warmly greeted by their teachers, they enter their classrooms to prepare for another adventurous day of learning.

I hope over the past month, our weekly eblasts have allowed you to see beyond the doors of The Lake. So many wonderful learning experiences are taking place daily. Students are growing not only their minds, but also their confidence, abilities to problem solve, capacity to work with others on a team, and collaboration skills. Teachers are stepping back to provide them challenges, while offering them the opportunity to productively struggle to find the answer. Students are engaged and invested in their learning.

If for any reason you are not receiving our email updates, please call the office to update your contact information. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter. As a working mom of two wonderful daughters, I know how difficult it can be to feel connected to my kids and their learning. Social media and other methods of communication can help us stay connected while sparking some great dinner table conversations. Please join our social networks.

Thanks for investing in your students and in our school. We are all very proud to be DOLPHINS!
Best,
Kristy Seifert
Principal

Thank you to the Palatine Library for coming and handing out prizes, and to the Fire Department and Police Department for opening up their vehicles to us. Fall Fundraiser Goal Achieved!
Thanks to all who participated in the Charleston Wrap fall fundraiser. Because of your efforts, we met the annual goal for our first fundraiser of the year, which sets the year off to a great start! We received over 80 orders online and via paper forms. Watch for an email coming soon for the date when you can pick up your items from school (likely end of October or early November).

Halloween Costume Closet
witch_pumpkin.jpg
The Halloween Costume Closet is a VL PTA run program that provides costumes for children in need. Children can borrow a costume for their holiday parties and return it after Trick-or-Treating. This is a wonderful program that allows all students at Virginia Lake to have a fun, safe Halloween. To effectively run this program we need volunteers to set up, manage, and break down the Halloween Costume Closet. Opportunities for volunteering will be available Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Halloween week. The time commitment is short, so it's a great way to give a little back to the Virginia Lake community.

Halloween Costume Closet is currently accepting donations! We are greatly in need of older kids costumes, size 8-10 and above. Please drop them in the VL school office.

Contact Allison Jellison if interested in volunteering or with any questions about donating costumes. ajjell@comcat.net or 773-590-8913

Special Education Advocacy: What Parents Need to Know!
Join us on Monday, October 16th at Sundling JH at 7pm for a program that is open to anyone in the local community.

Special Education can be a confusing "world". This session will break down what parents need to know to be an active, educated member of your child's team. We will discuss what special education is, who it serves, and touch on evaluations, IEP meetings, what you are entitled to and all those acronyms everyone is using. Come learn from Attorney Matt Cohen about advocating for your child.
