Focus & Follow Through
Set your minds on things above...set your hearts on things above.... As I read these words from Colossians 3 I wonder what it looks like to have a mind and a heart that is set on things above. How does one "set" the heart and mind on what is most important?
Though I am not a fan of the New England Patriots one of the things I heard about them during last season's march to a Super Bowl win was the phrase: "Do your job." Everyone on the team knew what their job was and they were disciplined to focus and follow through on that job. They did not look at the score, they did not worry about what their team mate was doing, they did not listen to the press, and they did not let their personal life interfere. This simple motto allowed them to reach the championship game and then overcome the greatest deficit in Super Bowl history (they were losing by 25 pts.). They should have lost that game (and I wish they had!) but they did not let their surroundings interfere with their focus on doing their job. They were coached to stay focused and it payed huge dividends in the world of football.
Maybe the opening lines of Colossians 3 is God's way of coaching you to "Do your job!" Do not be distracted by how the culture measures success, do not be distracted by a culture that values entertainment so highly, do not be distracted by your desire for things that glitter and shine, do not be distracted by earthly kingdoms, and do not be distracted by your own selfish desires. Do your job! Your job is to "fix your eyes on Jesus". Focusing on Christ's humility, love, self-sacrifice, teachings, power, and His unflinching faith in His heavenly Father will help us follow through as His children. We'll continue this line of thinking in the message this weekend...
