SIGGRAPH 2015:
Xroads of Discovery
Another SIGGRAPH Conference is about to begin and with it comes crowds from all over the world eager to find out what new ideas and emerging technologies will be presented and explored.
We're excited to learn more about augmented/virtual reality. There are some great contenders in the
Immersive Realities Contest and it will interesting to see who wins.
The CG market is headed in a new direction, and with 3D printing becoming even more popular, there's also an awareness of 3D scanning happening, and an understanding of how it all fits into the visual effects industry. We're looking forward to the
Exhibitor Tech Talks ,
the
Computer Animation Festival, and the
Emerging Technologies demonstrations hoping to bring back some new techniques to the office and to our services. And of course we can't wait to check out the exhibits.
But our favorite part of SIGGRAPH is seeing people we haven't seen for years, or even since the last SIGGRAPH. With all the parties going on, we know there will be plenty of opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones. See you there!

Where Is That Digital Double When You Need It?
When the audience doesn't realize they are looking at a digital double vs. the real-life character that pretty much represents the Holy Grail of what those in this market are striving for. The question is what really needs to be done to get there?
There are many things to consider such as which pipeline to use or how many texture maps need to be set or how detailed the final render of the model needs to be. Everything is based on the shot the 3D model will be in. If the character is in the background, there does not need to be a lot of work done on the face. However, if there is a possibility the character will show up again in the foreground as the main focus then more detail comes into play.
The film, television, and gaming industry use digital doubles for a variety of projects. What happens if you need a digital double but your talent is no longer available for a 3D scan? You will probably need to hire a body double. One way to avoid this is to consider using insurance scanning. Insurance scanning is when you 3D scan all of your top talent and archive the raw data until you need it.
After the day of 3D Scanning you will receive a contact sheet of what has been scanned. There will be no stress of tracking down a 3D scanning bureau at the last minute, no rush fees, and no last minute scramble of trying to get the talent back to the set. Who needs all that stress?
