TEACHER TIPS
"Creating a Culture of Feedback at Vanderbilt"
Part 1: History and Importance
Feedback is essential and valuable to our educational mission. Over the next few months we will focus on feedback tips for both learners and teachers at
VUMC. Feedback
in skill acquisition likely dates back to the earliest days of human communication and interaction. In his seminal article regarding feedback in medical education published in 1983, Dr. Ende attributes the description of feedback to rocket system engineers in the 1940's.
1 He goes on to describe feedback as necessary and essential to the learning process in all systems, especially medical education, to assess progress toward a desired goal or outcome, without which the system has no input
to
make real-time corrections.
In 1983 Dr. Ende described medical education as having a paucity of valid and reliable feedback for learners. Medical students and house officers "generated a system of self-validation, largely based on unintended cues."
1
Although written in 1983, his statements about feedback may be as applicable today as
then:
"One needs only to poll a few medical students or house officers, or think back to one's own training, to appreciate how little attention is given to feedback during clinical training."
1
Feedback remains an area for faculty development and growth at VUMC. In a recent survey of VUMC faculty the majority of 221 respondents report giving feedback "often" but rate an overall comfort level of 3.4/5 in doing so, with 65% reporting they would welcome faculty development to improve feedback skills. Look for more to come in the following months.
