About the Commission
This Commission is charged with making recommendations to the City Council and the Department of Housing regarding existing housing programs and policies, new programs and policies that would further San José's housing and community development goals, and the City's progress in meeting its housing goals. The purpose of the Commission is to help the City address the growing need for affordable housing and the lack of resources available.
Examples of the types of programs and policies that the Commission reviews and for which it may provide recommendations for include:
- Provide input to HUD Federal Annual Action Plan, which identifies the funding strategy for programs to respond to the community's housing and community development priorities; action plans which steers the Department on funding for services to: end homelessness; seniors; and place-based neighborhoods which is an initiative to create safe, clean and engage community members in low-income neighborhoods;
- Neighborhood stabilization work in place-based neighborhoods; and
- Funding strategies and priorities for the development of affordable housing in San José.
Appointed Commissioners will serve four year terms. Meetings take place at City Hall in the evening on the second Thursday of the month.
About the Appointment
- Low- or moderate-income person. For example, a 1-person household has an income limit of $52,850; a 4-person household has a limit of $75,500);
- Elected member of a neighborhood organization in a low- or moderate-income neighborhood;
- Employed by an organization and its primary purpose is to serve the interests of low-income residents.
Preferences will be given to the following applicants:
- Renters or tenants of rent stabilized apartments in San José;
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: development, lending, community development, homeless services, federal funding, or multifamily rental ownership/management experience; and
- While applicants are not required to live in the specific Council District with the vacancy, recommendation of the candidate for appointment will be made by the District 1 Councilmember.
