Oscars 2015
French Cinema honored once again!
Marion Cotillard's 2nd Best Actress nomination
The 2008 Academy Award winner just received another nod from the members for her role in Two Days, One Night. Shot in Belgium by the Dardenne brothers, this Belgian-French-Italian co-production was made possible by the reciprocal fascination between the actress and the writer-directors. While both brothers immediately wanted to hire the lead of La Vie en Rose only seconds after meeting her by chance, Cotillard accepted to play the part even before reading the script!
Alexandre Desplat nominated twice!
The French composer might win for Best Score either in The Grand Budapest Hotel or The Imitation Game. One of the most prolific and sought-after musician in the industry, Desplat works as much for France, Hollywood or International movies. He has been nominated 8 times by the Academy. His work includes A Prophet, Renoir, Argo, The King's Speech, Rust and Bone, The Ghost Writer, The Queen, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and many other! He has never won an Oscar... yet?
Timbuktu in competition for Best Foreign Film
This Franco-Mauritanian co-production was already mentioned in our last newsletter. While director Abderrahmane Sissako brought a high level of cinematography to this work, it's really the subject and its subtle way of touching the issues raised by the rise of islam extremism in Northern Mali which grabs the attention. A deep experience.
And that's not all!
Other nominations include the animated movie The Song of the Sea (French minority co-production), the Brasilian-French documentary by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado The Salt of the Earth, as well as the Chinese-French short Butter Lamp.
This brings the total of Oscar nominations for France to 7. A very encouraging number for not only French cinema (in the broader sense that we give it: related to French language and culture) but also cultural diversity in Hollywood.
