Vanguard Furniture Puts Emphasis On Education
Company launches scholarship program for children of employees
HICKORY -- Education is of paramount importance to Vanguard Furniture. A desire for constant improvement and ceaseless learning have been guiding principles behind the company's success for more than 40 years.
In that spirit of continuing education, the industry leader recently launched a scholarship program for children of Vanguard employees. This was the first year for the program, said Dixon Mitchell, president of Vanguard Furniture. The goal is to promote the importance of education while offering a benefit to employees.
Beneficiaries for the Fall 2011 semester:
Recipients of a $1,000 scholarship- Dustin Hudson, son of employee Dean Hudson, graduate program at Appalachian State University (photo unavailable)
- Andrew Mills, son of Lorraine King, NC State University (top right, click image to download)
- Tyler Smith, son of Tammy Smith, Western Carolina University (photo unavailable)
Recipients of a $500 scholarship- Brittany Newton, daughter of Jeff Newton, Caldwell Community College (bottom right, click image to download)
- Alec Thavychitch, son of Bint Thavychitch, Catawba Valley Community College (center right, click image to download)
The scholarship program, started earlier this year, is open to current college-aged students. The company received 16 applications, in which students were required to write an introductory essay. In addition, students were measured by grades, community involvement and special honors (such as Dean's List).
Teresa Biggs, executive director of Catawba Valley Community College Foundation led the committee which considered each application.
