Free Will and Predestination through the accounts of Abraham and Moses; Cain, Abel and Social Evil; Job and the Question of Theodicy: Sodom and Sexual Morality: Just War Theory; Noah and Divine Command Morality vs. Natural Morality; Jonah and Sin: Penance, and Forgiveness.
Shari Lowin, Ph.D is associate professor of religious studies at Stonehill College. She previously taught at the University ofChicago, Brooklyn College and Yeshiva University.

Mussar - Exercise For Your Soul
|
 You exercise your body and mind, but what about your soul?
The study and practice of Mussar will do just that. Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe defines Mussar as "building an interior world." When you have a strong spiritual core, you can be the best version of your self and your relationships with others will be enhanced greatly. The Talmud teaches that each of us is gifted with a holy soul. Furthermore, whether or not the light from that soul shines brightly out into the world is more than a choice, it's a responsibility. Mussar offers a framework of spiritual learning and practice to guide us in fulfilling that responsibility by focusing awareness on our middot, soul traits.
Together we will delve into Mussar using methods drawn from the Mussar Institute, www.mussarinstitute.org, Through text study, group reflection, meditation, journaling and targeted practices that balance and align your character traits (exercises for your soul), Mussar cultivates personal growth and unveils the light within.
Seasons of Mussar II
This class is for those who have completed Season of Mussar I and would like to continue their study and practice.
Tuesdays mornings 9:45 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. January 23, February 6 and 20, March 6 and 20, April 3 and17
The cost for the course is $108 for Shir Tikva members and $136 for non-members. Scholarships available. Please speak with Cantor Schachner.

We will be exploring selected passages concerning the word Bayit-house in Torah. Sometimes it is simply a place where we live. Sometimes it is our neighbors house that we are wanting. At other times it is Pharoah's house in which we are living. And when the Lord builds the house it is a House of God (Psalm 127:1).
We will also explore what it means for our homes to be a house of God in our daily lives today.
Each class is limited to 20 members.

Our synagogue has partnered with JF&CS Family Table, and we have made the commitment to collect 40 cans tuna and salmon every month. These items are distributed each month to JF&CS Family Table clients and our collection is critical in assuring that all clients can receive a full set of groceries each month.
Our collection bins are located near the Beit Midrash. Please help us fulfill our commitment to JF&CS Family Table by bringing one or more of these products whenever you come to the synagogue. Children are also encouraged to bring a product whenever they attend religious school.

LLAIC Information Session
|
 Tuesday, January 23, 10:00 a.m.
Lifelong Learners An Independent Collaborative (LLAIC) is a program for adults who love learning, and want to do it in a friendly, fun setting without exams or pressure.
You are invited to a LLAIC interactive information session at TST. LLAIC Membership is free for Shir Tikva members.
You will hear about the program and have an opportunity to learn about the spring semester courses and to ask questions of the people who will lead them. There will be refreshments and a raffle, for a free course.
Now in its fourth year, LLAIC, a secular organization, conducts classes and programs at Temple Shir Tikva. Its peer-led courses cover art, film, history, economics, science, photography, music from opera to rock, and literature of all genres. Its affinity groups and activities include current events, book discussions, French conversation, singing, and trips to live theatre, concerts, movies, and New England tourist attractions.
