Making Meaning of Kashrut with Rav Rebecca
Mondays, beginning November 6, 7 p.m.
Classes will be held on: 11/6, 11/13, 11/27, 12/4, 12/11

Kashrut is more than not eating milk and meat together and avoiding forbidden foods. It too, is to help develop a deeper understanding of the ways in which we live in relationship to the world around us and care for our bodies.

Studying Kashrut in rabbinic literature is a perfect lens to view the complex, questioning world of our rabbis and to see the multiple perspectives that exist on any one topic. By looking at biblical and religious sources, this course will focus on how each one of us can find meaning in the teachings of kashrut regardless of whether we keep kosher.

Session One: Biblical Origins of Kashrut: More Than Just Do's and Don'ts
Sessions Two and Three: Rabbinic Tradition and Kashrut: One Law, One Hundred Interpretations
Session Four: Tzar Ba'alei Chayyiim: Ethical Treatment of Animals
Session Five: Shmirat HaGuf: Taking Care of Our Bodies Spiritually and Physically

Please R.S.V.P. to Karen at [email protected].
Wednesday Morning Study with Rabbi Danny
Wednesdays, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Non-Israelite Women Challenging Gender Roles in the Bible

When we think about women in the Bible, who are the people that come to mind and what are the roles that these women usually fulfill? When we dig a little bit deeper, we discover that within our sacred texts there is a category of non-Israelite women who appear to challenge some of our regularly held stereotypes about how women behave and what was expected of them.

In this course we will consider the place of women in the Bible and then we will do an in depth study of a number of non-Israelite women, reading both texts from the TaNaCh and those from the Midrash to see the way that these women challenged the gender roles which we usually encounter.

Rabbi Danny is looking forward to learning with you.

Family Promise
Sunday, January 7 - Sunday, January 21

For two weeks in early January, Temple Shir Tikva will be hosting guest families from Family Promise Metrowest, a transitional shelter program. During this time, we share our TST home by creating a cozy space on the second floor, consisting of bedrooms, a living room, and kitchen. The guest families arrive each day in time for dinner and stay overnight, departing early in the morning for their work and school routines. Please support FPM by volunteering with us during these weeks!

If you are interested in volunteering in a capacity in which you will interact with Family Promise guests, all volunteers over 12-years old must attend a one-time ninety-minute FPM training (please note: volunteers of all ages are welcome; those under 12 do not need to attend the training). Upcoming trainings will be offered on Thursday, November 30 at St Paul's Church in Natick or Tuesday, December 12 at St. Andrew's Church in Framingham, both from 7:00-8:30 p.m. There are volunteer opportunities for those who are not trained to participate as well.

Information on signing up to volunteer will be provided in late November, for now please save the dates!

For any questions on Family Promise, please contact Wendy Newman at [email protected] or Susan Cohen at [email protected].
