By Barbara Rohde National Trails Day is Saturday, June 2, and Lincoln County has been celebrating it for 8 years with a series of events that occur on the same day. Guided ATV adventure, equestrian trail ride, and two hikes are scheduled to take place in different areas near Caliente, starting at 7 a.m. with registration at Jerry's Sinclair Station in Caliente. Check out our website for more details and registration forms, and come enjoy a beautiful day on our trails! Free Fishing Day occurs the following Saturday, June 9, all over Nevada; no fishing license is needed on this one day, encouraging people to try their hand at fishing. The annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Echo Canyon State Park, east of Pioche, offers a chance for kids from toddler to teens to catch a tagged fish worth a college scholarship, plus win great prizes and learn how to fish. The fun starts at 8 a.m.; call 775-728-4460 for more details. Farmers Market is held every Friday night in Caliente, from 4 to 6 p.m.; if you are coming through town, stock up on fresh locally-grown produce and other goodies (especially locally harvested honey from Blue Lizard Farms); follow the signs on the main street to the Cooperative Extension office on Lincoln Street. Local flintknapper Tom DeVuono will demonstrate his skills on Saturday, June 16, at Spring Valley State Park. Tom makes arrowheads and knives from different kinds of rocks, and discusses the history of their use. The program will start at 4 p.m. in the campground amphitheater. Harlem Globe Trotters Offers Summer Youth Skills Clinics
Harlem Globetrotters to Offer 2-day Basketball Clinics this Summer in Las Vegas! This summer the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters are partnering with 24 Hour Fitness to host basketball skills clinics for youth.Designed to take fans ages six to 14 behind the curtain to see the magic behind the Globetrotters' electrifying basketball skills and tricks, participants will also learn about the importance of staying active and eating healthy. Each clinic will be conducted by current Globetrotter players. Two, three-hour clinics will be held during the following dates and times at these 24 Hour Fitness locations: 2090 Village Center Circle, Las Vegas, NV 89134; June 25-27; 8:30-11:30am and 2:00-5:00pm; 5651 Centennial Center Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89149; June 28-29; 8:30-11:30am and 2:00-5:00pm. 12th Annual Juneteenth Festival Coming to The Smith Center
To fete the achievement, education, commerce, art, health and wellness of African-American culture and promote diversity and unity, the 12th annual Las Vegas Juneteenth Festival will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, June 19 at Symphony Park at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, 361 Symphony Park Ave.
The one-day festival is free and open to the general public. The festival features food, music, entertainment, exhibitors, children and family activities, performers and much more. Confirmed acts include soul singer Phil Flowers; multitalented group In-A-Fect; R&B vocal group Next Movement; and local favorite VanBuren.
Juneteenth recognizes June 19, 1865, the day Union Gen. Gordon Granger told slaves in Galveston, Texas, they were free - nearly 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation had ended slavery. The news sparked days of celebration. Since its inception, Juneteenth has evolved into a cultural celebration, highlighting the contributions of the diverse African traditions that enrich American culture, influencing food, art, history and music. Juneteenth is recognized as the nation's oldest African-American holiday observance.
In addition to commemorating slavery's end and serving as a forum for cultural awareness, the festival is a fundraiser for Rainbow Dreams Academy, a charter school that opened in February 2007.
