A Rise in Thefts from Autos

There has been a rise in thefts from autos in our part of Montgomery County, including several incidents that occurred in Rollingwood within the past week.  Rollingwood's Neighborhood Watch Program has been in communication with the police and block captains in our community. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the police.

Today, Montgomery County Police announced the arrest of several suspects in a neighborhood off of Massachusetts Avenue believed to be involved in many of the thefts on our area.  While the police are confident these suspects were involved with thefts from vehicles, we do not know at the current time whether they committed crimes in Rollingwood.

Earlier this week, Captain David Falcinelli, Commander, Montgomery County Police, 2nd District, issued the following statement, which includes some crime prevention measures:

Over the last several months, crime has remained well below trend lines in most categories. However, the 2nd police district (Bethesda-Chevy Chase, North Bethesda, Kensington) has begun to see a rise in thefts from autos.  Many thefts are preventable; approximately 80% of cars where property was stolen were unlocked.  A home security camera in the 4th district caught a thief in the act of attempted theft from auto. Take a look at the video below.

It shows a typical scenario: The thief looks inside a car to see if there is anything of value, tries the door and moves on if it is locked.

These criminals do talk and they tell their friends where the easy neighborhoods are located. Crime begins to multiply. You and your neighbors can help prevent this by practicing good crime prevention. Lock your car doors, remove valuables, leave nothing inside that looks inviting and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
What's Up with those Old Utility Poles?

Many residents have asked about the old utility poles that remain in place next to the new poles that were installed many months ago.  The old poles cannot be removed until all attachments have been relocated to the new poles.  While the cable lines have been moved, wires owned by Verizon remain on the old poles.  We have been in touch with Verizon, and we were informed that they will begin moving their lines this month.  We were also informed that this type of work is performed in between other jobs where service is out or being constructed.  While we continue to seek additional information on the project timeline, we wanted to share what information we have at the current time.
Chevy Chase Lake Draft Sector Plan to be Released Soon

We have learned that Planning Board staff will soon release a draft proposal for the Chevy Chase Lake Sector Plan.  Once adopted by the Planning Board and County Council, the Sector Plan will serve as the blueprint for redevelopment of the Chevy Chase Lake area.  This is an important development project that will have significant impacts on Rollingwood and the greater Chevy Chase community.

The staff draft will be presented to the Planning Board on July 16th.  Prior to this date, the Staff Draft Sector Plan will be available online on the Sector Plan website:

http://montgomeryplanning.org/community/chevychaselake/

Although the meeting will take place during working hours, the public is encouraged to attend the meeting on the 16th to demonstrate community interest in this project.  We will inform you of the details when available.

A public hearing will be scheduled for a later date prior to Planning Board action on the draft plan.  Once the Planning Board approves a final Sector Plan, it must then go to the County Council which will hold additional public hearings.  Some key dates are below.  We will keep you informed as this process continues.

June 19:  Elza Hisel-McCoy from the Planning Department will be making a presentation to the community at the Chevy Chase Village.  At that meeting, there will also be a discussion of changes being proposed to the County's Zoning Laws that you should be aware of.  For more information, go to:  http://www.chevychasevillagemd.gov/news/311/Community-Meeting-re-Local-Zoning-Amendments.html.  (Chevy Chase Village Hall, 5906 Connecticut Avenue, 7:30)

July 16:  The Planning Staff will present its draft Chevy Chase Lake Sector Plan to the Planning Board.  This will be a presentation of the draft, not the public hearing.  (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, exact time unknown)
