The final round of the 2017 WSCGA Match Play Championship was far from boring. Four of the six finals matches went 18 holes. The Championship Match of six time defending champion Dawn Woodard and past champion Lea Venable was full of excitement. Firing birdies back and forth at each other and draining putts from all lengths. Woodard took the early lead on the 4th hole with a birdie. Venable answered back birdying the 5th. Venable then proceeds to knock in a 20 foot putt on the 8th hole for birdie, but that didn't phase Woodard who topped her birdie by draining a six footer, as well. The back nine had a little more swing to it with Venable going 3 up through hole 15. Woodard came back, winning the 16th and 17th hole to take it down 18. Venable ended up winning the Championship 2up.
The Championship Consolation Division finals match was played by Links at Stoney Point local Donette Godwin and 16 year old Phoebe Carles. Godwin battled hard but Carles was on today, stiffing approach shots and making putts. Carles won this one 6&5.
In match 3 with Karin Wolfe and Carole Stone playing for the State One Division Title. Wolfe and Stone were equally matched throughout the day. However, Stones' two birdies weren't enough to take down Wolfe. Wolfe won the match 2 up.
The State One Division Consolation final match was the queen of consistency. Louise Givens was matched against Betty Jean Armbruster. The scorecard never varied more than bogey on any hole except one. Being all square going into the 18th hole, Armbruster made par and Givens a bogey for Armbruster to win the match 1up.
Number 1 seed Linda Morris and number 2 seed Cathy Robinson battled it out for the State Two Division Title. Morris coming off her career low round the day before gave Robinson a tough fight for the championship. The match only varied by 1up or 1 down through out the day. Robinson's par on the tough 17th hole, up hill par 3, ended up making the difference going into 18 one up to win the match 1up for the day.
The State Two Division Consolation match was played with Toni Buerkert vs Beth Bethel. Bethel took an early lead and never gave it back. Bethel saw the finish line early going as much as 4 up at one point in the match. However, Buerkert switched gears and fought back to get the match to only 1 down by birding the 16th hole. Bethel proceeded to win the next hole to take the match 2&1.
Returning to the Match Play Championship this year was the Crier's Tournament. We turned the links into a par 3 course and played a 2 best ball of the 3. The two teams were Kristen Rooke, Lola Bradshaw, and Jan Todd playing against Nancy Dodge, Jean Burns, and Connie Liley. Bradshaw nearly had a hole-in-one, bouncing it off the flagstick to one foot on the 8th hole. Dodge, Burns, and Liley ended up winning the Crier's event 120 to 134.
