Full Steam Ahead with the Career Profiles Project

This summer, VSJF welcomes Lizzie McCarty as the Career Profiles Project Intern. Lizzie is originally from Newton, Massachusetts and just graduated from Saint Michael's College with a B.S. in Environmental Science. She became interested in working in the Vermont food system after becoming involved with the campus farm at Saint Michael's and is interested in Farm to Plate because of its dedication to improving all facets of the food system. She hopes to delve deeper into environmental and agricultural education, making the Career Profiles Internship a great first step in her career.

Lizzie is hard at work building out resources for teachers and students, creating additional profiles, and working with educators around the state to plan for the project in the upcoming school year. Additionally, Lizzie and the rest of the Task Force are partnering with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets to organize in Washington County the first of a series of panels for high school students, featuring food systems professionals who will discuss their work experience.

School Snapshot

This May, students in the Ag Tech program at Randolph Technical Career Center adapted the curriculum to interview three farmers in a panel format to compare their career paths and business models. Students then selected which answers were most helpful to their understanding of food systems careers and, with help from the F2P Career Profiles Task Force, created a brochure of the interviews that was showcased at the school's annual open house. Overall in this past academic year, students from Lamoille, Orange, and Windsor Counties conducted more than a dozen interviews, which are in the process of being finalized into profiles for a second edition of the Vermont Food System Career Profiles and Pathways publication.
