How much garlic
 do I order?

Garlic bulb weight varies, but figure about 6 to 8 bulbs per pound. Multiple the pounds by the estimated cloves per bulb (see descriptions above). For example, 10 pounds of Musik times 5 cloves per bulb times 8 bulbs per pound would give you 400 plants.

About Vermont Valley Community Farm Garlic

All the varieties we sell will give you good size bulbs under the right growing conditions. We reproduce the garlic for multiple years on our farm. The Musik and German have been on the Farm for over 15 years. The Russian, Italian Red and Chesnok for 5 years. We have trialed several other varieties that we have discarded.
Garlic harvest 2016
We have been growing garlic for 22 years for our CSA. Our entire operation is Certified Organic by MOSA. Garlic growing techniques are quite diverse; so stick with what works for you. Our methods have changed over time, but currently we do the following: fertility similar to onions; water management to keep the garlic at full soil moisture capacity, particularly once the bulbs begin to form; plant into plastic mulch to aid water management and weed control; straw mulch between rows and over the entire bed; spacing at 5 inches between rows and in-row, with 4 rows per bed; hand weed as needed; late October planting; mid-July harvest.
