Volume 9  |March 1, 2017

Happy March!  I think Thalassa Cruso sums up our recent and current weather with this:

March is a month of considerable frustration - it is so near spring and yet across a great deal of the country the weather is still so violent and changeable that outdoor activity in our yards seems light years away.

I would like to recap and thank the many people and businesses that made our Annual Meeting a success! It was lots of fun . . . and WOW was the entertainment spectacular! We loved the steel drum music, Hawaiian dancers/singers and the fire dancers. If you happened to miss it, we have video on our Facebook page (with 1.3K views!) And, thanks to Chad at The Heights for the great food and roomy venue!  And a special nod of appreciation to Heidi Bloom for the great decorations and help with the arrangement! They really set the mood.

Congratulations to our award winners – Director’s award, Halley Jones (The Purple Goose - Top left); President’s Award, Tara Osterholz (Verona Chiropractic - Above); Volunteer Award, Jon Johnson (Humana) and Stefanie Kelly (Modern Woodman Fraternal Financial - Left). Thank you for all you do for the Chamber and I greatly appreciate your support!
And congratulations to Ray Hegg (above left) and Brian “Perpetual Luck” Lee (above right)who won our large prizes in the raffle. Yes, that is correct… Brian has won three years in a row and has agreed to buy my lottery tickets for the rest of 2017!

I would like to thank our very generous sponsors for the event -BMO Harris, Culver’s, KSW Construction, Miller and Sons, Rockweiler Insulation, and Slaby and Associates

I would also like to thank our large prize sponsors -Capitol Bank, Oak Bank, State Bank of Cross Plains – Verona and Wisconsin Bank and Trust.

Thanks to our Raffle You Just Can’t Lose donors too! We had lots of wonderful prizes! – ACE Hardware, AJ’s Pizza, Alliant Energy, Anytime Fitness, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, Chick Fil-A, Culver’s, Deer Valley Golf Course, Edelweiss Golf Course, Edward Jones – Matt Gerlach, Engineered Construction, Fairfield Inn, Fisher King Winery, Group Health Cooperative, Goddard School, Goochi Poochi, Grandstay Hotel, Gray’s Tied House, Holiday Inn Express, Hop Haus Brewing, JNJ Craftworks, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Monk’s Bar & Grill, Mr. Brew’s, Nuage Salon, Pizza Ranch, Rainbow Child Care, Rhapsody Arts Center, Rockweiler Insulation, Schorr Construction, SVA, Ten  Pin Alley, The Purple Goose, Trademark Homes, True Veterinary Care, Tuvalu, VACT, VAPAS, Verona Lions Club, Verona Press, Verona Vision Care, Verona Woods, Walgreens, Wisconsin Brewing, Servpro and Wisconsin Distributors.

And, thank you to all of the Chamber members who attended. Our events could not happen without you!
On that note, we have some great events coming up in March that you won’t want to miss! Next week (March 8th) we have our next networking lunch at the new Verona Woods Restaurant (yummm)! The Verona Area School District will be there to do a brief informational presentation on the upcoming referendum. So, sign up soon! Both are things you won’t want to miss!

And, the ever-popular EPIC tour is on March 16th. We still have space available but sign up soon, because we do have to limit the reservations. Following the tour will be the Business After 5 held at Capitol Bank. They have a fun March Madness theme planned to get us in the mood for the tournament! You may attend the After Five without going on the tour.  And, watch for the Chamber’s tournament bracket as soon as the teams have been announced!
More details on all of these events and the registration links are later in the Newsletter!

Today maybe Doug Larson was correct when he said, Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush.

Verona Lions To Hold Food Drive
March 18 | 9 - 1 pm
Miller & Sons Supermarket in Verona

In an effort to help curb hungry in our community the Verona Lions will be holding a food drive to benefit the Badger Prairie Needs Network- Food Pantry.  For over 30 years the food pantry has proved food and non-food items to individuals living in the Verona Area School District.  That area includes the City and Town of Verona, parts of the City of Fitchburg, and parts of the City of Madison.  In 2016 470,000 pounds of food was distributed to over 11,000 individuals.
The food drive will be held on Saturday, March 18th at the Miller & Sons Supermarket in Verona from 9:00 am-1:00 pm.  As shoppers enter the store a member of the Verona Lions will hand them a list of food and non-food items needed by the pantry.  Shoppers are encouraged to purchase one or more of the items as they shop.  Collections boxes will be located near the store exit to drop off the donations.  It is the club’s goal to fill the bed of a pickup truck with donations that day.  Cash donations will also be accepted for the pantry.  The food drive is part of a “Relieving Hunger” initiative of Lions clubs world-wide to raise public awareness of the vital role Lions clubs play in their communities.
Engineered Construction wins 2016 Projects of Distinction Award for The Employer Group Building
Madison, Wis., February 23, 2017 — Engineered Construction was recently awarded the 2016 Projects of Distinction Award by Associated Builders and Contractors in Commercial Construction – $2-$10 million category for The Employer Group building located in Verona.

Type of Construction: 2-story, Design/Build steel structure office building, Class A.
Size of Project: 11356 Square Feet.
This extraordinary building design features a two story curved glass wall, extending the views to the south across the wooded fields beyond. The exterior of the building utilizes much glass and architectural detail, inviting guests to experience much of the same as they enter inside. A large stamped concrete patio incorporates the University of Wisconsin’s “W” into the design and invites staff and guests to have a seat at one of the patio tables while enjoying the surrounding landscape.

The interior of the building has a mix of open and enclosed offices arranged by a curved central spine that reflects the external curved glass wall. The main communicating stair is enclosed in glass and is constructed of stainless steel and stone slab treads/risers. The main conference room pulls the exterior materials in through the stone wall visible through the frameless glass entry wall. The second level opens into a large hospitality space decorated uniquely with reclaimed barn wood and large serpentine bar with granite top. This area was designed to gather employees together and unify the office as The Employer Group expands during future growth.

Adding to the dynamic and expanding business landscape of Verona, Engineered Construction was very proud to facilitate and construct the Employer Group’s new building.  A visually stunning architectural building coupled with an extraordinary, creative and employee-focused interior make this project a role model of achievement.
