Save Our Troops Arkansas license plateDid you know the state of Arkansas has 21 military-oriented specialty license plates?

The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration Office of Motor Vehicle offers college/university, conservation, organization, and military specialty license plates. The military-oriented choices include "U.S. Armed Forces Retired," "Purple Heart - Combat Wounded," "Support Our Troops," and "National Guard."

Some military plates are free, while others require special fees. A portion of the special plate fees benefits supporting organizations in many cases. For example, for every Support Our Troops plate issued or renewed, Arkansas Support Our Troops, Inc. receives $25.

Women veterans' summit set for Aug. 25

The Arkansas Women Veterans' Summit will take place Saturday, Aug. 25, at Pulaski Technical College in North Little Rock. The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting the free event, in conjunction with the VA Regional Office, Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Arkansas Department of Workforce Services, and Pulaski Tech.

All women who have ever served in the military are invited to participate. The summit will give women veterans an opportunity to connect with other women veterans and learn about the benefits they have earned as a result of their honorable service.

Workshop speakers will discuss various topics of interest to women veterans including health care and benefits. Additionally, exhibitor booths will provide free health screenings, information, resources, and giveaways. Pre-registration is encouraged, as space is limited for lunch and speaker sessions to the first 200 registrants.

Online registration and additional information are available at veterans.arkansas.gov/awvs.html.

Honor flights to D.C. continuing for Arkansas World War II veterans

Another group of World War II veterans from Arkansas will travel to Washington, D.C. in October on an "honor flight" to visit the National World War II Memorial. Approximately 180 veterans will make the trip, according to an article published June 21 in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Sponsored by Electrical Cooperatives of Arkansas, Walmart Foundation and Tyson Foods, the free honor flights have allowed 432 World War II veterans from Arkansas to visit their monument in the nation's capital since 2009, the D-G reported. The World War II Memorial wasn't completed until 60 years after the war's end, meaning veterans from the era are now in their 80s and 90s, and many would be unable to travel to see the monument on their own.

The honor flights are for World War II veterans only, though family members may pay their own way and serve as guardians. Additional honor flights are planned. Veterans wishing to go should contact Bill McKenzie, Tyson's director of aviation and honor flight leader, at 479.290.5039.

Learn more about the nationwide honor flight project at honorflight.org.

A new documentary, Honor Flight, follows volunteers in one community coming together to send every local World War II veteran to see the memorial built in their honor. To watch a preview, go to honorflightstories.com and select "Honor Flight Trailer."
