Veterinarians: You're Invited to the Free
16th Annual CVRC Conference for Veterinarians
Sunday, November 2

CVRC logo Each year, the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center (CVRC) sponsors two conferences - one for veterinary technicians and one for veterinarians. This year, the latter will be held Sunday, November 2nd at Ruth's Chris Steak House at 1777 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD.

In announcing the event, conference chair, Dr. Jay McDonnell, said, "The conferences are a way for CVRC and its specialty practices - Animal Dental Center, Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic, Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology, Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates, Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists, Eyecare For Animals, Veterinary Imaging of the Chesapeake and Veterinary Neurology of the Chesapeake - to say thank you to the referring vets and their staffs. The November conference is being funded by educational grants from Iams Pet Nutrition, Antech and Nutramax."

According to Dr. McDonnell, the conference will provide 6 hours of state-approved CE. Each of the six speakers will have 50 minutes with 10 minutes for questions and answers.

Diagnosing Deafness in Dogs: The BAER Test

There are more than 80 dog breeds in which congenital deafness has been reported. It can potentially appear in any breed but especially those with white pigmentation or the pie-bald gene.. Breeds with a high incidence of congenital deafness include the Dalmatian, Australian Cattle Dog, the Australian Shepherd, the Bull Terrier, the Catahoula Leopard Dog, the English Cocker Spaniel and the English Setter. (Note: Deafness in the Doberman, which is also accompanied by vestibular, i.e. balance, disturbance, results from a different cause.)

Acquired deafness occurs when a dog born with the ability to develop and maintain normal hearing experiences hearing loss. There are many causes of acquired deafness including canine distemper, which can cause ear damage, infections of the middle or internal ear, a torn or ruptured ear drum, head trauma, or old age, to mention but a few.

At Veterinary Neurology of the Chesapeake, we offer BAER test (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response), the only 100% reliable diagnostic test for congenital or acquired deafness in a dog. More importantly, it can accurately detect dogs that are unilaterally deaf (deaf in just one ear).

The majority of the dogs we test are not sedated or anesthetized. In the BAER test, a computer records the electrical activity of the brain in response to sound stimulation. The test is not painful and can be performed on dogs at least six weeks of age. MORE>>

This case was referred to us for MRI imaging of the cervical spine. The patient is a 1 year 9 month old male German shepherd. He presented with left forelimb lameness, knuckling and left forelimb abduction, persisting for one week. These symptoms led the referring doctor to believe that a herniated intervertebral disk was the possible cause. Upon the start of our imaging we realized this was not the case.

The initial scout image revealed that a large soft tissue mass was growing in the left lateral musculature of the neck. MORE>>
