Make sure you add visiting the shop to your Memorial Day weekend plans - we've got a Viognier showdown, VA wine and craft beer tastings, and discounts all weekend (10% off 3 or more bottles of wine or craft beer).

Saturday afternoon we're showcasing Virginia's Signature grape - Viognier. We like to refer to Viognier as Chardonnay's exotic sister characterized by floral aromas, peach and tropical fruit.  Come sample 3 great Viogniers, all the same price from 3 areas -- Southern France, Santa Barbara California and the Monticello region of Virginia. Full descriptions of each wine are listed below.

Cheers!

French, California and Virginia Viognier Tasting

Saturday, May 26

Noon to 6:00pm

Domaine Saint-Anthelme Viognier 2011

Vin de Pays du Gard (Southern Rhone, France)

$22.95

Pale yellow in color, this 100% Viognier has strong aromas of lychee, apricots and peach. Aged on its lees for 6 months to soften and broaden the palate feel. The finish is round with a hint of minerality. Country wines from the Gard (Vin de Pays du Gard) are known for their lively fruity characters.  They are bottled only a year after cultivation and can be enjoyed very young.

Gabriele Rausse Viognier Reserve 2010

Monticello, Virginia

$22.95
Buttery, creamy gold in color. Exotic aromas of honey, apricot and pear.  Medium weight, bright fruit forward and very soft. The finish is long, showing off a hint of oak, vanilla and pear. Gabriele Rausse is the groundskeeper at Monticello and the man to seek for vineyard consulting in Virginia.

Vogelzang Birdsong Viognier 2010

Santa Ynez Valley, California

$22.95

This Viognier offers all the beautiful exotic notes of the varietal without being overpowering. Tropical notes of lychee fruit and jasmine jump from the glass and then yield to more subtle accents of dried apricots and river stones. The Bird Song Viognier is from a block that was planted in 1998. It is a blend of Viognier that has been fermented in the neutral oak but also in steel.
