GULF YACHTING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING RECAP

As reported in the recent Snake Bytes, a contingent representing the Viper 640 Class Association and Rondar Raceboats traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi the weekend of January 9-11 to present the Viper to the Gulf Yachting Association (GYA). The GYA is looking to replace their Association-sanctioned one-design, the Flying Scot, with a sport boat. Each GYA club is required to own at least one of the Association boats so they can compete in the GYA's major Capdevielle regatta series. What happens is that the clubs end-up purchasing multiple boats (some as many as six or eight), which could be a boost of 50 - 100 boats for whichever class is selected as the new boat. After a lengthy review, the GYA has limited consideration to the Viper and the VX One.
Team Viper at the GYA: Dan Tucker, Paul Young, Tracey Faircloth, Buttons Padin, Deb & Craig Wilusz, and Don Faircloth. Juan Mauri not shown.

Dan Tucker had the Viper presentation video recorded and every decision maker in the GYA Capdevielle review has received a link to this video. Here's the link for the video so you can see it, too. HERE

TIME TO FINALIZE YOUR MIAMI PLANS

The first week in March will be Viper 640 week in Miami.

On March 1-2, Vipers will be competing for the 2015 EFG Winter Cup, the final Qualifying Regatta for the 2014-2015 EFG Viper Pan-American Championship. There are currently 17 boats registered and the scuttlebutt is that there will be two or three more. A special Bacardi cocktail will be provided to the boat that is #20 to register. The NoR for the Winter Cup can be found HERE.

Following the Winter Cup by a few days will be the EFG/Bacardi Miami Sailing Week. A record 34 Vipers have registered for BMSW, which will make this a "not-to-be-missed" regatta. There is room for a bunch more Vipers on the Biscayne Bay starting line, so make plans to attend. NOTE: The Early Bird registration discount for BMSW is about to expire. All Viper entries received by February 1 will be $350. Entries received after Feb 1 will cost $450. Don't delay, make your plans for Miami and register today HERE.

MIAMI LOGISTICS

BMSW has assigned the Vipers to the US Sailing Center Miami for launching and trailer storage; however, there is not much room left at that facility. Alternative plans are being developed and if you have not confirmed your trailer storage reservations with Pat Downey, USSC Miami, please do so immediately via phone at 305-854-1058 or e-mail to usscmiami@bellsouth.net.

For the EFG Winter Cup, all Vipers will be dry sailed out of the USSC. For BMSW, all boats must be launched by 1700 on Wednesday, 3/4 and moved to Coral Reef Yacht Club where we will all raft together for the remainder of the regatta. If you have questions, please contact Viper Class Administrator Buttons Padin at epadin@padesta.com.

SPERRY TOP-SIDER CHARLESTON RACE WEEK UPDATE

Charleston Race Week (April 16-19) is one of the high points of the Viper 640 racing calendar. With 20+ Vipers expected on the starting line, the sailing will be competitive and challenging. Ashore, CRW is renowned for its after racing parties; and the Charleston area's history, Low Country hospitality, and cuisine are not to be missed. With a large Viper presence on the water and ashore, this will be a fantastic multi-class event. All entries received by Jan. 31 will receive a $50 discount. Don't delay and miss this saving. Registration for CRW can be done HERE.

American Viper regatta of the year, sailed in a moderate, shifty northeasterly in Sarasota Bay January 10-11. "It made sense to team up since our respective co-owners couldn't make the trip, and sailing in shorts in January is a lot better than staying at home," Beardsley explained. Each sailor on Blackout Panda took turns on the helm every third race, making for a unique team win with three co-skippers. READ MORE

ED FEO'S TEAM LOCOMOTION WINS ARIZONA YC BIRTHDAY REGATTA
Over the weekend of January 16-18 the 55th Arizona YC Birthday Regatta and Leukemia Cup was the first event of the Viper 640 West Coast Winter Circuit, held during Martin Luther King Day Jr. weekend at Lake Pleasant, 40 miles north of Phoenix. The event is known for its beautiful desert scenery and its usual "festival" vibe, including the annual "mini-bar" hosted after the racing on Friday by Kelly and Billie Beaver who poured enough rum drinks to make sure everyone was relaxed and happy.

The Fleet partying in the desert.

The event saw 13 teams, with an even mix of local and out-of-state boats in attendance. Over the three days of racing, the winds for the start of the first race were good, but quickly lightened to provide challenging conditions for everyone involved. In fact, each day ended with everyone getting out their paddles to make it back to the bar in warm and sunny conditions. READ MORE

2-TO-1 JIB HALYARD
When the Class Rules were amended in November 2014, a new 2-to-1 jib halyard system was approved. This optional upgrade has been designed to relieve some of the loads on the mast's upper jib halyard hardware. A full discussion of this upgrade with an illustrated step-by-step installation guide can be found in the PDF file attached to Peter Beardsley's October 27, 2014 comment in the Forum string HERE.
