Welcome New Partners!

Proposals for the National Science Teachers Education Association and Virginia's Environmental Education Conference are now being accepted.

The NSTA and the Virginia Office of Environmental Education are combining conferences this year. The conference will be Oct. 16 - 18, 2014 at the Richmond Convention Center. The deadline to submit a proposal to the VOEE is Jan. 27. Additional information will appear on the NSTA and the Virginia Naturally websites as information becomes available.


Grant Funding Opportunities

Apply now for a mini-grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The purpose of these grants is to assist teachers in providing Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE) and support teacher professional development and programs to advance environmental literacy in the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. The deadline to apply for a grant is Jan. 10.

Revenue from the sale of Friend of the Chesapeake license plates makes possible the Chesapeake Bay Trust funds to support environmental education.

Virginia Trees for Clean Water Request for Grant Proposals

Through funds from the USFS Chesapeake Watershed Forestry Program, VDOF has developed a Virginia Trees for Clean Water program which is designed to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay by planting riparian buffers and trees in our neighborhoods and communities.Click here for details on grant funding available. The deadline to apply is Feb. 13. 



High School Outdoors Writing Competition

The Virginia Outdoor Writers Association, Inc. (VOWA) and Bass Pro Shops are sponsoring the 21st Annual High School Writing Competition.The goal of the competition is to reward high school students for excellence in communicating their personal experiences in the outdoors. The submission deadline is Feb. 3. 


James Madison University Physics Contest  

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at James Madison University challenges teachers and students to demonstrate their understanding of physics concepts through video. The deadline to submit the video is April 11.    

New Resources

Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achieving (VISTA)

Check out the funding opportunities for professional development from VISTA. Programs are for teams of 4th-6th grade elementary teachers, new middle and high school teachers, school division science coordinators with five years' or less experience, and science education faculty. Benefits include free professional development, paid stipends, money to spend on science supplies and much more. Applications are also being accepted on a rolling basis for VISTA coach positions.


New Learning App from the Smithsonian for Pre-Schoolers 

Shutterbugs: Wiggle and Stomp is a learning game aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, previous national science standards and the Common Core. In the game, children aged 3 - 5 learn how to describe movement and motion while visiting exotic animals from the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. It's available for iPad and Android tablets, or it can be played online.



Awards and Recognitions

Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition - Programs that Work 
Nominate effective student and teacher programs for this award and recognition. The deadline to submit a nomination is Dec. 11.    

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Nominate a K - 6 grade teacher to receive national recognition. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 1.

Conferences and Workshops

Winter Wildlife Festival  - Jan. 24 - 26 in Virginia Beach. Registration is now open. 
Energy and Sustainability Conference - Feb. 14 - 15 in Richmond.

The Virginia Junior Academy for Science will be May 13 - 15 in Richmond. The deadline to submit a paper is March 1.  
National Association of Interpreters Chesapeake Region II Workshop- March 11 - 14, 2014, at Westmoreland State Park in Westmoreland County, Va. Registration is now open.
Environment Virginia Symposium - April 8 - 10, 1014 in Lexington. Registration is now open.
