Governor's Final Budget Supports Medicaid Expansion, Safety Net

Governor McAuliffe's final budget includes providing coverage for 300,000 uninsured through Medicaid expansion. It also increases support for safety net clinics throughout the state. The budget does not include comprehensive dental coverage for adults currently enrolled in Medicaid.  To learn more, the  Virginia Oral Health Coalition (VaOHC) is hosting several advocacy-related learning opportunities, including a webinar today.

Legislative Priorities Webinar - Today!
VaOHC is offering a webinar today, December 19, from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. to provide more details about the budget and the upcoming legislative session. Advocacy 101 Training | January 4
VaOHC and our partners are also offering an Advocacy 101 Training on Thursday, January 4, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Richmond. We will discuss how policy decisions are made in Virginia and how policy change can be a lever to improve oral health in the commonwealth. Attendees will also receive oral health-specific messages to guide policy.  Click here to register .

Maryland Study Makes the Case for Adult Medicaid Dental Benefits 

A recent study shows Maryland Medicaid paid $10 million for dental-related emergency room visits in 2016, and another $1.4 million for inpatient admissions for adults with chronic dental conditions. The study was conducted by Maryland Dental Action Coalition to assess whether state funds could be reinvested to establish and adult dental benefit in Medicaid. How Medicaid Works Chartbook

The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis and the Virginia Poverty Law Center released am updated version of the How Medicaid Works Chartbook. The Chartbook explains Virginia's current Medicaid program and outlines opportunities to expand health coverage to more low-income Virginians. Download the full Chartbook.
