Farm's executive team will be available throughout the show to discuss our capabilities and how we can assist in your next design and development effort. Learn more about our work on CareFusion's Snowden-Pencer® take-apart line of laparoscopic instruments.

In March, CareFusion, a spin-off off Cardinal Health, announced the limited availability and upcoming commercial release of its new line of take-apart instruments. Farm was chosen to assist in the development of the Snowden-Pencer® line of laparoscopic instruments that supports safe cleaning and sterilization protocols for reusable medical devices. Having worked on the Diamond-Line, a previous line of Cardinal Health instruments, Farm conducted international ethnography to establish user requirements, designed mechanisms for intuitive articulation and verifiable reassembly, and conducted usability validation testing for the new take-apart line.

Click to View VideoBased on the brand identity and ergonomics of the Diamond-Line, Farm generated several possible concepts with varying component configurations that addressed the need for easy cleaning and sterilization. To prevent accidental disconnections, intuitive tactile and audible snap-in-place connections and markings were incorporated to help ensure proper disassembly and reassembly. The multi-dexterous handle with an integrated ratchet gives surgeons comfort and control during surgical procedures, while minimizing hand fatigue. The patented ring-handle design accommodates both precision and palm grips for ease of use.

Prototypes were tested with users leading to the final take-apart design. Features include three take-apart components that are easy to clean, sterilize, and visually inspect, creating a more cost-effective alternative to traditional disposable instruments.
