LOCAL NEWS

Millions of dollars at stake in Mission Health-Blue Cross battle
Cable-TV customers are used to financial disputes in which a content provider threatens to withhold favorite shows or the cable company says it will block a network. The disputes always get settled, often minutes before the final deadline.

The same thing is happening in Asheville, except this time, something much more important is at stake: health care.

Mission Health System, which has a 90% market share of hospital admissions in Buncombe County, says it won't accept Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina insurance after Oct. 4. That means thousands of Asheville-area folks with Blue Cross coverage might pay more for out-of-network service at Mission, or drive to Hendersonville's Pardee Hospital or elsewhere for Blue Cross-affiliated health care. The presentation was led by Michelle Bilsky,  Vice President of Risk Management for MedMal Direct Insurance and registered RN, massage therapist and esthetician.  It was a relaxing, rejuvenating evening of de-stressing, learning and collegiality! Our next Women in Medicine event will be held in November.

STATE NEWS

From NCMS: What the STOP Act Means to You
On June 29, Gov. Roy Cooper signed the Strengthen Opioid Misuse Prevention (STOP) Act of 2017 into law. Aimed at curtailing the opioid abuse epidemic in the state, the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) supported this legislation. Read the law and a comprehensive history of its passage on the NCMS 2017 Legislative Blog.
From NCMS: New Web Page for Clinicians Working in Small, Rural or Underserved Areas
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently launched a new section on the Quality Payment Program dedicated to doctors and other clinicians working in small or rural practices as well as those treating patients in underserved areas . This page serves as a single point of reference to help prepare for, and actively participate in, the Quality Payment Program, especially, for those participating under the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) track. You can also review the flexibilities to help reduce the participation and reporting burden on small practices for 2017.

Health Care Overhaul Collapses as Two Republican Senators Defect
WASHINGTON - Two more Republican senators declared on Monday night that they would oppose the Senate Republican bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, killing, for now, a seven-year-old promise to overturn President Barack Obama's signature domestic achievement.

The announcement by the senators, Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas, left their leaders at least two votes short of the number needed to begin debate on their bill to dismantle the health law. Two other Republican senators, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of Maine, had already said they would not support a procedural step to begin debate. To read the full article, click here.
