The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Greetings from Kyoto, Japan.  Yes, Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel are on the road again!

With this issue of the newsletter we welcome Dr. Benjamin Alter, N.D., as a newsletter contributor. Dr. Benjamin brings a calm, healing presence to Pacific Naturopathic and is a perfect fit both energetically and medically.  You can read about some of Dr. Benjamin's experiences in last month's newsletter.

Writing about specific, tangible physical challenges, like pain or insomnia, is much easier than writing about abstract influences on health.  Vitalism, a core element of naturopathic medical practice, presents challenges to effective communication.  Most of us have at least some inkling of what we mean when we use the term Vitalism, but how do we communicate this innate semi-understanding to others? Well, we'll try our best as understanding of energetics is crucial to profound healing.  Our writers never know what the others are going to focus on, so it is interesting to note the similarities in thought and how the article complement each other and as a whole, weave a complete picture of the month's theme.

In this issue, Dr. Connie begins by musing on her journey in medicine and offers her insights into Vitalistic understanding; Dr. Benjamin discusses the vital force and introduces the therapeutic order of the healing process; Dr. Marcel presents an expanded definition of Vitalism; Dr. Connie writes on how natural elements energize the vital force; Jane H. discusses the animating power of the Vital force and Lauren H-W makes one last attempt to stave off winter through her yummy recipe for summer fruit crisp.

For readers looking for long-time associate Elijah Free, Elijah may be texted or phoned at 831-325-3300 or emailed at  [email protected].  We understand that he is up and running in a new local office.

Hernandez Center news includes articles on two cancer-fighting plants, lung cancer and marijuana and restoring your sense of smell after chemotherapy.

May all beings be healthy and happy!

Dr. Connie's Musings...

Musings on Vitalistic Medicine

In the mid 1970's, after a stint at the East West Center at the University of Hawaii, Masters of Public Health in hand, I was given full funding to attend the UH School of Medicine. Standing at the doors of that institution and picturing my future, I realized that if I walked in, I would walk out those doors some 4 years later programmed to believe in and to practice conventional medicine. At that time, I did not have a strong foundation in medicine, but I did know that I did not believe that the pharmaceutical management of diagnosable disease equates to health care.

And so the journey began. From the mid 70's through the mid 80's, Dr. Marcel and I traveled throughout Asia, visited with psychic and spiritual healers, herbalists, yoga and breath therapists and acupuncturists. Ultimately, while living in Japan and working on a project with a close friend, we learned of naturopathic medicine, and determined to hire a naturopathic doctor.  As none were to be found, Dr. Marcel and I ourselves applied to attend naturopathic medical school.

We were awed by the vitalistic foundation of naturopathy, and by naturopathic principles of practice. Naturopathy is based on the understanding that there is a vital intelligent healing force within each one of us, and that our job as doctors is to help the patient encourage the flow and remove obstacles to that vital force. Beyond that, we were taught to identify and treat the cause of disease; to above all do no harm; to practice preventive medicine; to treat the whole person; to educate our patients.

Our training, in addition to conventional medical training, paid tribute to pioneers in vitalistic naturopathy, and included homeopathy, hydrotherapy, botanical medicine, dietary modification and more. Naturopaths were striving for recognition as practitioners of scientific medicine (thus becoming eligible for insurance reimbursement and, I might add, being seen as worthy of the status given conventional practitioners.)  I got the sense then, that just as many osteopaths became indistinguishable from conventional physicians, the same might happen with naturopathic doctors.

At that time, though, Dr. Marcel and I moved to Brattleboro, Vermont. We dreamed of establishing a scientifically based and enlightened nature cure center, along the lines of the late 19th century and early 20th century water cure centers. (Think of John Harvey Kellog's heavily satirized Battle Creek Sanitarium.) We quickly learned how difficult our project could be, given 21st century building and special use permits. Our subsequent experiences in California and in Hawaii have borne out the difficulty.

Nevertheless, the longer we practice, the more we find the basic tenets of vitalistic medicine to be primary in healing:  Surrounding us and flowing through us is an unlimited source of pure energy. It is creative and intelligent, the source of being and the source of healing.  The scientifically validated therapies are adjunctive in healing to the freeing of this flow of energy, not the other way around. If the vital force is not flowing, there is no pill proven effective in a double blind placebo controlled study that will effect healing.

May the (Vital) Force Be With You

Benjamin Alter, ND

Naturopathic Philosophy 101

In Naturopathic Medicine, we follow a hierarchy of healing termed the Therapeutic Order. This template created by Drs. Jared Zeff and Pamela Snider, two of my teachers in medical school, is intended to guide the practical application of Naturopathic Medicine. This simple guide is the compass of the healing process, always leading to true health.

Level one of the Therapeutic Order is to establish the foundation for optimal health. While these words may sound vague, the message is quite clear and specific; remove any thought, action, substance, or behavior that may be disturbing and replace it with something more healthful. Whether it is a food that is causing a stress on the system, physical inactivity, or an emotionally damaging relationship, these fundamental points must be addressed first. That is why this is level one, the foundation. If the base of your health is not strong and stable in these ways, further treatment will simply be palliative.

Assuming the ground level foundation is strong and stable through health promoting foods, behaviors, and relationships, let's shift the focus to level two; stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms. This is where Vitalism is applied. The "self-healing mechanisms" of the body are also referred to as the Vital Force, or vis medicatrix naturae in Latin.

What is the Vital Force?

The Vital Force is the spark of life in us all that innately moves in the direction of health. Just as a seed bursts through the earth's crust and shoots toward the light under proper conditions, the same life force moves through us all. Just as the plant adapts to maximize it's ability to access sunlight and vital nutrients, we humans are also adaptive organisms. The inherent wisdom of the body is always looking out for us. We are always doing our best to grow towards the light. From this perspective, even the most debilitating diseases are our body's best attempt at health. Therefore, the symptom that one experiences is the very expression of the Vital Force.

How can I stimulate my Vital Force?

While vitamins, minerals, herbs, or supplements affect the physiology from an outside-in approach, stimulating the Vital Force makes an inside-out impact. There are as many ways to stimulate the self-healing mechanisms of the body as there are humans on the planet. Science is indeed coming to affirm that which most of us have intuitive known all along. The inner and outer environment that we subject ourselves to powerfully influences how we feel and function. Following is a brief list of ways that have been scientifically proven to stimulate the Vital Force in some way:
  • Spending time in nature
  • Laughter
  • Hugging/physical touch
  • Being around Loved ones
  • Positive thinking
  • Gratitude
  • Diaphragmatic breathing
  • Meditation

These simple activities and ways of being have a powerful impact that permeates the interwoven framework of our psycho-neuro-immuno-physiologic selves. Our heightened experience is the activation of the Vital Force. While we absolutely feel happy and peaceful in the mind, the body enters an enhanced state of healing. The immune system is strengthened. Hormones are balanced. Blood flows smoothly. Detoxification is enhanced. Healing is accelerated.

Next time you find yourself reaching for a medicine or supplement to address your symptoms from the outside-in, consider how you might stimulate your Vital Force to heal from the inside-out. When done with a clear and positive intention, applying these Vitalistic principles to your daily life can have a powerful and sustainable impact on every aspect of health and wellbeing.

Understanding Vitalism -- More Than You Think
(clue: don't think, be!)

Vitalism... what does that word bring up in your consciousness?  Vitalism is defined as " a doctrine that the processes of life are not explicable by the laws of physics and chemistry alone and that life is in some part self-determining."  Uh, OK. Let's read this definition again.  What does it really mean?  Where does this definition take your consciousness?  Here's my take...

The brain strives to categorize or put things in boxes in an effort to understand them and control them.  The brain rebels against out-of-the-box abstract thinking.  It does not like to accept as real anything it cannot quantify, qualify and file into appropriate neurological storage. To vitalists like most naturopathic doctors, denial of Vitalistic principles is the ultimate human egoic arrogance.  It is obvious to any being who is striving for true, non-materialistic happiness in this lifetime that a motivating energetic component exists beyond the physics and chemistry of tangible creation. We also know that t he human body is greater than the sum of its parts, and that its parts and processes are interdependent.

With this in mind, let's rephrase the basic definition: to Vitalists, the human organism has a basic Creative Intelligence which sustains, animates, motivates, heals, coordinates and inspires living beings.

Naturopathic medicine is built on the knowledge that the vibrancy of this innate "Vital force" determines the life and health of the human organism. Yes, naturopathic doctors intervene medically through clinical nutrition, lab tests, supplements and medicinals to support the body's efforts to heal itself from physical challenges. But we also address the energetic schematic that sets the pattern for physiological processes by using techniques that bring about a closer integration between mind, body and spirit.  To be redundant: naturopathic doctors address the energetic component, simply because this is the level where lasting, profound healing occurs.

Healing is not a random process.  It is a focused internal process of personal evolution, growth, self-development and self-discovery. As a person heals, their mind, body and spirit become more closely integrated. True healing is a process of discovering how to bring into expression the highest vision we have into the present moment.

Whether our experience of life is joyful or challenging, each experience represents an opportunity for personal growth. As we begin to understand our relationship to both the physical and intangible aspects of reality, the more vibrant and alive we feel. The more deeply we dive, the closer we come to experiencing the upward connection that lies at the core of our being.  This is the truth of who we really are.

The final element of the expanded Vitalistic definition is that change is an integral part of the healing process. In order to heal, we must be open to change. This willingness to change enables us to become free of past behaviors, attitudes and belief systems that are obstacles to personal development and spiritual growth. If we do what we've always done, we will be what we've always been, and get what we've always gotten. Resisting change means we will continue to be who we are not, which keeps us from the freedom inherent in becoming who we truly are: pure, unconditional love.

Putting the Nature Back in Naturopathy
Earth, Water, Fire, and Air

Long advocated by naturopaths, though somewhat neglected in urban practice, nature cures have now caught the attention of both modern day medical researchers and conventional medical doctors.

I was recently gratified to read a Dr. Mercola article entitled "Most Americans Suffer from Nature Deficiency Syndrome". In this article, Dr. Mercola details the researched benefits of spending time in nature, including a decrease in anxiety and depression and fatigue, improvement of self esteem and social connections, and regularization of blood pressure.

Doctor Mercola mentions one of my favorite Japanese nature cures, Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. Japanese national research confirms that time spent in the forest lowers blood pressure, blood sugar, and cortisol levels. The Japanese government designates specific forest areas for forest bathing. Forest bathing guidance is also offered here in the Bay Area. Check out www.shinrin-yoku.org or make your individual way to the redwoods.

Another Japanese nature cure, reminiscent of the European hydrotherapy cures, is Misogi Shuho. This is the practice of purifying and invigorating oneself by standing under a waterfall. In the Shinto tradition, prior to the waterfall cleanse, practices are prescribed to awaken awareness of the vital force within. Tensing body parts, breathing and chanting are often a part of the process.

Though forests and waterfalls are generally absent in urban environments, there are many other nature cure options. Dew walking, or walking barefoot on the dewy grass in the morning, stimulates the organs through acupressure, awakens the vital force, enhances immunity. Cardiac surgeon Dr Stephen Sinatra has authored several books (The Sinatra Solution and Earthing The most important health discovery ever?) detailing how contact with the earth restores our bodies to a healthy electromagnetic state, and helps normalize cardiac function. Other earth element support could include mud baths or rock climbing.

Earth, water, fire and air elements resonate with energy centers in our bodies, balancing associated endocrine organs and nerve plexuses, and awakening vital force. Home based water therapies range from foot soaks to Epsom salt baths. Alternating hot and cold showers alternate vasodilation and vasoconstriction, and support circulation and lymphatic drainage.

With regards to the fire element, heliotropic healing, or healing through the rays of the sun, is ever available. Remembering that "only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid day sun," whole body exposure in less intense sun does far more than increase vitamin D levels. A therapy combining fire and water elements, infrared sauna treatments kindle immune system response and promote other body functions, as well as using the skin as the body's largest organ of elimination, thus facilitating detoxification.

The air element is fortified through breathing practices. One of the simplest ways to balance the sympathetic nervous system is through 10 conscious breaths, inhaling through the nose, and allowing the breath to escape through the mouth.

Have You Ever Seen a Dead Person?

Jane 2013

Being raised a Catholic I saw many dead people in open caskets. It was fascinating to me as a child because death was so far from a reality in my life then.  But it didn't bother me because those dearly departed did not seem like real people- something essential was missing from the likeness. Later on I was in Nepal at a huge Hindu festival and a dying adolescent girl was brought to the Holy River. Her parents were in search of a miracle. Alas, it was too late and, as I watched from the opposite bank, I witnessed the moment she passed.

I could almost swear that I saw her soul leave the body but it may be that I felt the energy leave because of a deeper knowing.

Now, years later, I am engaged in working with the life energy of my clients through mind/body techniques. Now is a unique time because the idea of  humans as machines that need to be fixed is no longer the one and only approved way to heal.

If you are reading this newsletter then you probably understand that your body is a self-healing organism.

Inherent healing energy has been recognized by all cultures for thousands of years whether known as Chi, Ki, Prana, Mana, or Ruach. When this energy is unleashed and activated it creates the conditions for the body to heal.

It used to be that this energy healing was anecdotal and scorned by science but the good news is that there is more and more evidence-based research coming out all the time.

So, the question might be, "How do I activate it?" Let me count the ways...

I love to teach EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to my clients.  With EFT Tapping, your fingertips literally tap into your body's own energy and healing power through acupressure meridian points. EFT is spreading very quickly and changing lives all over the world for millions of people. WHY? Because it works.

Hypnotherapy is a process which entails bringing someone into a focused state of concentration from which they can get in touch with underlying events and patterns which are blocking them physically and emotionally. The hypnotic process uses this state of consciousness to more effectively transmit the messages you desire throughout your mind/body. When the energetic blocks, old emotions, and limiting beliefs are neutralized, it frees your energy and releases your body's natural healing abilities.

I became a Reiki Master because it is such a pure form of vibrational healing. The life force energy does not come from me but rather through me, from the universe, into my hands. Once I invite this energy and feel it in my hands, I lay them gently on the recipient at specific points. Reiki stimulates a natural tendency toward vibrance, and is beneficial in maintaining and extending  balance, health and emotional well being. Reiki can be learned and the ability to channel the healing energy through attunements from a qualified Reiki Master. I offer Reiki treatments only to clients who have experienced Hypnosis and EFT with me.

There are many more energy healing techniques but the most important thought to take away is that you are not a machine that just needs a good mechanic to fix you, oh no, you are so much more. Your healing energy may be subtle but it is the stuff of miracles.

Subtle vibrations.
Energy.
Exquisite sensations.
Energy.
A near perfect nirvana.
Energy.
Cleansing us like a sauna.
Energy.

Lauren's Recipes

Summer Fruit Crisp

I look forward to summer fruits all year long. Who doesn't like warm fruit with a crumbly topping with dairy-free vanilla ice "cream?"

Yields: 1 (9x12) pan or 2 quart round soufflé dish-serves 6-10 people

Filling:

3 pounds of  organic stone fruit (nectarines, peaches, apricots, plums), 1 inch slices
¾ cup coconut palm sugar
1 teaspoon gluten-free vanilla extract
zest and juice of 1 small lemon
1 teaspoon tapioca starch or 2 Tablespoons Gluten-free oat flour

Topping:

1 cup gluten-free oat flour, sifted
½ cup coconut palm sugar or date sugar or maple sugar
1/2 coconut oil, refined is neutral in flavor
zest of one lemon
¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, sliced almonds)
½ cup gluten-free rolled oats (not quick cooking)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wash lemons and fruit with vegetable wash. Do you know how many people have handled that fruit? Trust me, you don't want to know...just wash it and rinse well with cold water! Slice fruit and put in a large bowl and add the rest of the filling ingredients to the fruit, stir well. Pour into a 9x12 glass baking dish or a 2 quart round soufflé dish or something equivalent-it can be a different shape, but the same size. Set fruit aside.

For the topping, place all ingredients into a food processor with the s blade, and pulse until it is crumbly and the size of cherries. This can also be done with a pastry cutter in a bowl. Pour evenly over fruit and bake for approximately 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and fruit is bubbling. This must be cooled for 1 hour. Prepare ahead of time and freeze uncooked, then bake later. Increase baking time if frozen to approximately 1 hour.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- how to interpret a thermogram -

thermography

Breast thermography takes the temperature of the breast, or more accurately, takes many temperatures for each breast, comparing one breast to the other. Elevated temperatures suggest fired up metabolic processes. Heat rises with injury, inflammation, and cellular growth and repair. When we see elevated temperatures in one breast, we understand that there is a process occurring in that breast that is not occurring in the other breast.

While patients understandably would like us to define for them what process is occurring, the temperature does not give us a definitive answer. Normal temperatures do not absolutely guarantee that there is no problem. A quiescent cancer may not raise the temperature while it is in that resting state. And, while a raised temperature may indicate cancer growth, it may simply indicate inflammation or recent injury.

Therefore, in evaluating thermographic findings, we look at a patient's history, at any observable or palpable signs of pathology, and at vascular abnormalities viewed on the thermogram, to determine risk ratings and further courses of action.

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.

But intravenous therapy is not just for cancer patients.  More than half of our IV patients come for various "cocktails" to help them ward off infections and optimize their health.  We offer a number of individualized versions of the famous "Myers Cocktail." Read about the Myers Cocktail HERE

Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
