2010 Nicolas Potel Macon-Villages (Cote d'Or, Burgundy)

macon-villages

TJ's palate has drastically changed since we opened The Urban Grape in June of 2010. One of the most noticeable changes has been in his blossoming love affair with French Chardonnay from the Burgundy region. These fresh tasting wines have bright, mouthwatering acidity and bear little resemblance to their American counterpoints. That said, even American Chardonnay has been trending toward a more balanced expression in the past couple of years. We've been drinking Burgundian Chardonnays all year round (especially the creamy Pouilly-Fuisses), but this warm weather is the perfect time for a wine from the Macon-Villages region.

This may not be the most eye-catching bottle of wine ever, but what lies inside is truly delightful. Yellow in color with green tints, this wine is reminiscent of honeysuckle, fresh almonds and honey. Lighter in body, the Nicolas Potel will satisfy both a Chardonnay drinker and a Sauvignon Blanc lover, making it a perfect party wine. This is the type of bottle you keep chilled in your fridge all summer long, knowing that whomever walks through the door will fall in love with it.

The perfect pairing is grilled chicken or pork chops, roasted veggie salads or cheeses. In fact, the next night TJ is working late, I plan on foraging for goodies at South End Formaggio and having a little of this wine in my glass.

Enjoy!

The Problem With Facebook...

Social Media in general and Facebook in particular has had a huge impact on The Urban Grape's ability to forego the cost of advertising as we grow. When we started out, there was always a ton of interaction on our Facebook page, but in recent months that has dwindled. Now we know why. Facebook has made it nearly impossible for our "fans" to see our posts in the hopes that we will start paying up to $20 per post to have it turn up in your News Feed. And they've installed a counter at the bottom of each post to drive you crazy....I mean, so you can see how few people are actually seeing your what you write (our percentages hover around 10% of our users and have dipped as low as 4%). Ridiculous, right?

If you haven't seen our daily, and often several times daily, FB updates on events, inventory and other UG news in your Feed, then we're not turning up in your Feed and, frankly, I have no idea how to get this information to you through this medium. Some people say to switch your settings to allow you see all of your pages instead of the ones Facebook chooses for you, others say to go onto our page and like several posts in a row and then it will start to show up. I have a better idea and one that I know will work - like us on Twitter, @urbangrape.

If you're not on Twitter, don't be afraid. There's a lot of nonsense, but it's also a great way to glean information from the businesses that you frequent. If you are on Twitter, create a list of your favorite businesses and stick us on there. Then, once a day or every few days, check the Twitter Feed for that list. You can be assured that ALL of our tweets on events, inventory, food pairings, interesting articles, and the occasional pop culture reference will be there.

Also, try to read this newsletter every Tuesday at 9:30, especially at the beginning of every month when we list our events and other information. If you have a question, be in touch! We're always just a good old-fashioned phone call away. Or best yet, stop in and ask us what's new!
