Voice Privacy: An Issue that Needs to be Heard Can "smart" technology be too smart? It can, if it puts consumer privacy at risk. For example, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has filed a complaint with the FTC against Samsung, claiming that the company's smart TV records private conversations without telling users. In so doing, EPIC claims, Samsung has violated federal privacy laws including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
Similar concerns exist around other voice-activated technology, such as the "Hey Siri" app, introduced with iOS 8. Your microphone is always on, listing for "Hey Siri." While it's waiting, Siri is recording everything that you say. This crosses an important line, in which more and more of our conversations are being recorded without our truly informed consent or choice. Since voice data is not yet being collected en masse, we have a chance to think proactively and begin putting programs in place. But the time to act is now.
