Kala Gallery announces
Voices a call for entries exhibition open to artists working in all media . Voices seeks work by artists who explore the idea and action of making sounds from a wide range of perspectives.
 
The voice consists of sounds and non-sounds including talking, singing, laughing, crying, screaming, etc. It is an act of self-expression, communication and story telling, and a part of our cultural identity. The exhibition Voices examines the human body as a memory chamber and musical instrument; voice as expression of political conflicts and rhythm of nature; immersion in sonic landscape; and more. Work will be selected by Mayumi Hamanaka, Kala's Gallery Manager.
 
Application Guidelines
 
Submissions: Artists may submit up to five images of work created in any media. Only submit images of work available for the exhibition. Work previously presented at Kala Gallery is not eligible.

Shipping and Delivery:
Artists are responsible for the delivery and pick-up of selected artwork. All accepted work must be received by Kala Gallery by October 10, 2015. Kala will accept artwork shipped by Fed-Ex, UPS, USPS, but cannot provide funds for the transportation of artwork. Please label all packing materials with your name. Shipped work should arrive in a reusable container with return postage or prepaid shipping documents and correct return labeling. Hand-delivered artwork may be dropped off October 7-9, 12:00-5:00 pm.

Application fee: $35 or join Friends of Kala Membership Program at the Artist/Student level ($45) and waive the application fee, along with receiving all other membership benefits, including 10% off of workshops, classes and art purchases.

STOP & GO: Made From Scratch
An evening of Stop-Motion Animation & Food Pairings
Screening at Kala Art Institute, September 19, 2015 at 7:30 pm


Stop & Go: Made From Scratch offers a delicious suite of animations in a variety of impressions on crafting, horticulture and food. In some animations artists literally play with their food, while in other works they employ a wide range of materials to create a desired effect. Altogether this screening is more than just a feast for your eyes. It also presents images, sounds and sensations that will both nourish and delight audience members.

For this screening Stop & Go is very excited to partner with Kelsie Kerr of Standard Fare. Kerr is an acclaimed chef who, over the past three decades, has contributed to the success of several well-loved Bay Area restaurants including Chez Panisse and Zuni Café. In 2014, Kerr launched her own establishment Standard Fare which specializes in seasonal and sustainable menus packaged to-go in innovative and re-usable ceramic wares.

Explore the versatility of letterpress by pairing traditional and contemporary printing techniques on the Vandercook press. Explore low-relief collage to create textural background imagery similar to rubbings and have the option to finish the prints with hand-set lead and wood type. Learn press set-up, ink mixing, and how to operate the press for both techniques. All skill levels welcome; previous letterpress experience optional.

Learn how to manage your color! A critical step to achieving consistent, high-quality digital photographs and prints is to master the art of color management. This class will help you gain control over the transition from screen to paper, and camera to screen, providing valuable knowledge for your future print jobs.

Class Cost: $60

Learn image transfer techniques for paper arts, collage, fiber arts, and more. Students will receive instruction in the best methods for combining, transferring, and layering found and created imagery and text in their work. Cerruti will demonstrate a myriad of transferring methods, as well as techniques for creating transparent layers. Gain experience in different approaches that use inexpensive materials and go home with a wealth of knowledge and a pack of samples made in class! The Image Transfers course is great for beginners and seasoned artists who would like to add more dimension and depth to their work.

Saturdays, October 3, 10, & 17, 12-4pm
Class Cost:  $265
 
This class explores stencil and spray paint as flexible printmaking practices. Stencil is part of a rich tradition of street art and graffiti, and it is a beautiful medium for paper, fabric, wood and more. Students will learn to design and print stenciled images using both free-hand drawings, and photoshopped images. Great for beginners and experienced artists.
