PAIR shares the outpouring of concern for all those who have suffered loss and been impacted by the tragic events of the past week. We are also very concerned that the fear stemming from these events has fueled the spread of misinformation and intolerance.

This is a critical time to stand up for the core American value of providing refuge to those escaping persecution.

Individuals admitted as refugees to the United States , by legal definition, are people who face threats of terrorism and violence in their own homes. The veracity of their own horrific experiences and their identities are vetted more than any other entrants to the United States.

As voices of intolerance rise, our voices of compassion and welcome are more important than ever.  Here are some steps each of us can take.

1. Know the facts about refugees and share them with your friends and colleagues.

2. Contact your elected officials to let them know that you do not support legislation that will prevent refugees from resettling in the U.S. using these  welcoming points

3. Welcome and support refugees:  use the hashtag #RefugeesWelcome on social media to send a message of welcome to those seeking refuge wherever they are from and whatever their religion or donate to PAIR programs.

You can learn more about the very real people who benefit from our compassion or who are negatively impacted by our fear and intolerance:
  • Read "Adam's Story" about a PAIR student.
  • Read "Kate's Story" for a PAIR volunteer's perspective.
  • Attend PAIR's screening of the documentary Refugee Kids December 10 to learn more about the stories of refugee students through film and a student panel discussion.
