NY Rangers Makes Quilt Donation for
"Hockey Beats Cancer Month"
NY Rangers Alumni, Dave Maloney with children at NYU Rusk

On October 17, Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. suppported the New York Rangers & the Garden of Dreams Foundation on a quilt donation in conjunction with their hospital visit program. Pat McCullough, a dedicated volunteer for Wrapped Up in Sports coordinated and led the project making and distributing pre-made quilt kits to volunteer quilters to assemble and complete. Each kit included a pattern and instructions, pre-cut fabric and stabilized sports apparel donated by the NY Rangers and the Garden of Dreams Foundation.

Rangers alumnus and MSG Network personality Dave Maloney made a special visit to NYU Rusk - a comprehensive outpatient program for children with cancers and blood disorders - and spent the day interacting with a dozen children, taking photos, signing autographs, handing out gift bags and distributing the Rangers inspired quilts.

"It's not every day that we get to do these types of events," said Maloney, "Each time I do, it's always a great experience. Being a hockey player and getting to lift these kids spirit for an afternoon is great. They are all terrific kids and will go on to do something special."

Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. recognizes the positive impact professional sports and athletes have on children in need. We believe the quilts handed out to the children at NYU Rusk provide a different kind of medicine, a smile. We know the quilts will also provide the comfort, support and love they need to help them through their treatment.

NYU Rusk is a part of the NYU Health System, which is one of Garden of Dreams' 22 partner organizations. The mission of the NYU Health System is the relief of human suffering caused by disease and disability through education, research and patient care. The Hassenfeld Children's Center is a comprehensive outpatient program for children with cancers and blood disorders. The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine provides specialized inpatient services for children with a wide variety of conditions and Tisch Hospital is a world-renowned center for the care of children with neurosurgical, cardiovascular, maxillofacial, and genetic disorders.

Introducing Our Newest Partner: Massachusetts Hospital School

On November 20, (34) sports team-inspired quilts were donated to the students at the Brayton School Sewing Classroom at the Massachusetts Hospital School (MHS), Wrapped Up in Sports' newest partner!
MHS provides medical, habilitative, rehabilitative, recreational, educational and vocational services to children and young adults with multiple disabilities, assisting them to achieve their maximum level of independence in all aspects of life.

The school serves students between the ages 6 - 22 coping with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and other neuromuscular disorders, Myelodysplasia, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, and congenital or acquired physically debilitating disorders.  These disorders are typically complicated by co-morbid medical conditions such as diabetes, seizure disorders, respiratory conditions, cardiac conditions and psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders.

In addition to the inpatients and day students, MHS also serves hundreds of additional children and young adults from the disabled community with their extensive therapeutic recreational programs.

The partnership was founded by avid quilter and Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. volunteer Mary Desrosiers.  Mary has been helping make and donate professional sports team-inspired quilts for Wrapped Up in Sports since 2009 and helped make quilts for its very first donation to Children's Hospital Boston.  Since then, her quilts have been included in nearly every donation we have made to organizations and programs including The Jimmy Fund Clinic, Hospitality Homes, Room to Grow, Horizons for Homeless Children, South Shore Medical Center, Hanscom Air Force Base and the Italian Home for Children.

Together with her good friends Mary-Margaret Miller and Ruthann Levesque, they have started their own team of quilters to help make quilts to donate to children in need.

"MHS is delighted be developing a partnership with Wrapped Up in Sports- we are a perfect match", says MHSF Foundation Director, Kathleen Kalell.  "The average length of stay for the children in the hospital is about 4 years. The children's rooms are a source of comfort and show their interests. As one can imagine, and with laundering and much use, we will benefit greatly form these quilts. They will serve not only as a source of warmth, but will be great fun for our very enthusiastic sports fans!"
