Happy July ASY team members!
I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful San Diego weather, or perhaps you are traveling to other climates for vacation. I will be with my parents in the Caribbean July 15-23 celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
While many Marines and Sailors will be PCS-ing this summer (PCS is military code for Permanent Change of Station aka moving to a new base), we are still serving those who serve with Concrete Beaches, Summer Fun Preschool, summer camps, Hospital Child Watch, deployment quilts (see more on these below!), Recreation Center time, and more!
The June 10 Poker Run was a notable success with more riders this year and a BBQ reception at the Biggs Harley Davidson finish -- shout out to all of you who gathered raffle items, forwarded the invitation to friends, and volunteered the day of!

Service Spotlight: Operation Kid Comfort
|
|
Operation Kid Comfort (OKC) is a year-round program that supports military children whose parent is, or soon will be, deployed. The military family submits photos of the child and deploying parent, we then print the pictures on fabric paper and send them to volunteer quilters around the country to sew into a source of comfort for the child. Volunteer quilters opt for as many or as few quilts per year as they wish to make and complete the project at home.
Last month, Akina Goodson stepped into the volunteer role of OKC Coordinator due to the influx of quilts our branch has received; our branch works with ASY San Diego to process all quilt requests on US mainland west of the Mississippi River. We are now seeking more quilters to meet the rising demand as units gear up for deployments in the coming months. If you or someone you know are interested in quilting, please keep in mind that OKC has no boundaries. Our branch engages quilters in Napa, Temecula, El Cajon, and Vacaville! This program is uniquely facilitated through the mail, allowing volunteers to make military life easier from their home.
Prospective quilters may contact me to receive a packet describing the guidelines, mailing instructions, quilt layout, and quilting instructions.
