For 40 years, National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, has been about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to serve their communities. In addition to the thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week, it is also the perfect time to promote your cause and recognize your volunteers. Virginia Sends Strong Message of Support for National Service 
Governor and First Lady McAuliffe Highlighted in National Effort

The National 2016 State Leadership Award from Voices for National Service was awarded to Governor and First Lady McAuliffe in recognition of their leadership roles in promoting national service. Governor McAuliffe was an integral part of the Commonwealth becoming the first state recognized as an Employer of National Service and for sponsoring the Governor's Higher Education Presidents' Summits. Governor McAuliffe Celebrates by Making 1.4 Millionth Call

Governor McAuliffe helped celebrate the 10th birthday of 2-1-1 Virginia by making the the 1.4 millionth call to the information retrieval service on February 11th. 2-1-1 Virginia has now become the Commonwealth's largest information and referral network available to citizens for health and human services. Governor McAuliffe praised 2-1-1 as an effective way to address the needs of Virginians when they are in need of services and don't know what to do. "This is what Virginia is all about -- putting their hands out and helping people," commented Governor McAuliffe. More.

The week-long event salutes AmeriCorps members and alums for their service, thanks AmeriCorps community partners, and communicates impact on communities and on the lives of those who serve. During AmeriCorps Week 2016, CNCS plans to focus on its Employers of National Service Initiative. More.

 
Virginia's Mayors and County Leaders to Recognize  National Service

The fourth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service will take place in communities throughout the Commonwealth, April 5. Our mayors and county officials are turning increasingly to national service as a cost-effective strategy to address local challenges. Events on this day are an exciting and impactful way to connect leaders with the AmeriCorps programs in their communities. More.

for Impact


Building partnerships with private organizations and government agencies is vital to the success of the AmeriCorps model. Beans and Rice, Inc. USERV AmeriCorps is a fantastic example of how these partnerships are working to achieve the program's goals. USERV AmeriCorps projects are supported through a network of partnerships with governmental, education, and non-governmental entities. Their partnerships, in particular, with higher education and K-12 education agencies are an integral part of their program. This year members are serving alongside more than 120 alternative break volunteers from 12 different universities across the nation. More.

 
Reshini Premaratne, 17, of Glen Allen, and Chase Anthony, 13, of Virginia Beach, have been named Virginia's top youth volunteers for 2016 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Reshini founded an organization which has raised $10,000 for the homeless, donated more than 450 pounds of goods, and has spread to more than 20 schools throughout Virginia. Chase launched a fundraising drive which raised more than $30,000 to battle breast cancer after his teacher was diagnosed with the disease. Youth volunteers were also recognized from Virginia Beach, Spotsylvania, South Riding, Midlothian, and Alexandria. More.
