Fall Update 2014
"When action meets compassion, lives change."
|
What successful summer programs we had at True Friends this year! In three short months, more than 400 volunteers contributed over 20,000 hours in the areas of summer camp, respite, True Strides therapy horses, grounds & facility work, and youth development & leadership programs. This is an 8,000 hour increase over last year and YOU made it possible. What a great testimony to the spirit of our first season as True Friends!
In friendship,
Conor McGrath & Amanda Sorell

Winter Camp
A new school year means summer's over and everyone is counting down the days until to winter break... This winter, spend a few days snowmobiling, sledding, having snowball fights, and drinking
lots of hot cocoa with campers at either Camp Friendship or Camp Courage, December 26-31.

Volunteer Spotlight
|
Mitch Sikorski learned about True Friends from his Special Education class with Patty Waletzko at St. Cloud State University in the Spring of 2013. The class provides the chance for a 20 hour service learning opportunity, and Mitch signed up for a Respite weekend with us. Staff and campers enjoyed having Mitch as a volunteer - so much so that a camper Mitch had worked with wouldn't stop asking for him to come back to camp! Hearing the impact he had on this individual, Mitch decided to apply for a staff position with Respite and since then, has worked many weekends - and even a few weeks during Summer Camp! Mitch is also now a staff member with Team Quest. What started out as a service requirement for class has changed not only his major and his career path, but his life. Thank you, Mitch, for your obvious passion and dedication to giving campers quality experiences.

Then... Now... Next...
|
THEN... Summer camp, summer camp, summer camp! 10 weeks later and True Friends' Can (and did) survive! Groups, individuals, youth, adults, mothers and daughters, campers' family members, and even former campers made up the over 400 volunteers who donated their time across the organization this summer, and for that we all THANK YOU - and not just us, but more importantly, the campers thank you, too, for giving them such a positive camp experience. NOW... Even though camp is over, we're still busy! Amanda's been in classrooms at SCSU and going to fairs all over the metro area recruiting for Respite weekends - which are currently full! Conor's busy, as always, developing the department and getting internships started around the organization (mentioned above). We have lots of groups taking part in maintenance volunteering cleaning up all of our campsites, and prepping cabins for winter.
NEXT... WINTER CAMP! There aren't many spots, so make sure you sign up now to secure yours! We go sledding, snowmobiling, climb the rock wall in the gym, go on day trips, and, of course, have lots of hot chocolate. Come be a part of the fun! Email Amanda or log-in to the Portal to sign-up.
