APRIL 2016
Director's Corner
It's spring in New Smyrna Beach and you know what that means ~
PANCAKES IN THE PARK.

This fun annual tradition will take place on Saturday, May 7, from 7-11 a.m.  in beautiful Old Fort Park. Come out and enjoy pancakes, sausage, coffee, orange juice, and bottled water. As a special treat this year enjoy pure Vermont maple syrup donated by Shark Bite Marketing, with your pancakes. The cost for breakfast is only $6 and all proceeds will benefit the museum.

In addition to a great breakfast, be sure to stroll through the New Smyrna Farmer's Market or take a seat and listen to music from the The Beu Sisters. They are a well-known local trio who have performed with some of best artists like Billy Ray Cyrus and have opened for Country singer and songwriter, Kelly Clarkson. Songs the family has written have appeared on numerous soundtracks and the sisters have released several albums on their own Beach Breakz Records label. You can sample their music and get links to iTunes by visiting their website. The Beu Sisters will begin performing at approximately 9 a.m.

We want to thank the City of New Smyrna Beach for the use of Old Fort Park. Lane-Lennon Insurance is the primary sponsor for this event. The coffee table is being sponsored by Hottie Coffee and juice provided by Skraggs Groves. Be sure to support these generous businesses that help us so much.

We hope you are able to attend Pancakes in the Park and support the museum. Tickets will be available soon at the museum or the day of the event in the park.

See you at the Museum!

Knights of Columbus

Now through April

In our north room we have a new exhibit sponsored by the Knights of Columbus #4934 . We would like to thank museum volunteer Dave Miner for his hard work in helping put together this fascinating exhibit which features photos, artifacts, clothing, and more that help show the history of this organization.

Welcome to a new feature for our newsletter called Mysteries at the Museum.

Here at the museum there are times where a  visitor will ask a question we don't have an answer to or maybe there are photos that we don't know the exact location of. Perhaps you have a question or photo you would like help with. If so, send it to us and we'll either answer it here or post it for readers to send in their thoughts. For questions we don't know the answer to, who better to ask than you, our readers. We know many of you have tremendous knowledge of our area and somebody out there will be able to help out. So without further ado, let's get to our first mystery.

A friend of mine recently asked me about the Clark House. Based upon the limited information on the image it can be dated to between 1937 and 1946, the years when Coronado Beach and New Smyrna Beach were separate cities. Remember, New Smyrna added Beach to its name in 1937 and the two cities merged in 1946. Do you recognize the Clark House and know its address? Is it still standing? Do you know who the Clarks were? If you have information on this image please contact me.

We are excited about plans to install a sound system and screen/projector into the ceiling in the back of the museum. This will be a really nice addition to the museum and allow our presentations to have a more professional feel. We are hoping to raise $2,000 which will include the equipment and installation.

Donations will be accepted by cash, check, credit card or through PayPal. Please designate the purpose on the comments section or on your check.

The archaeologists have been busy writing and editing the revised Smyrnea Settlement: Archaeology & History of an 18thCentury British Plantation in East Florida booklet. It is nearly complete and we hope you will be pleased with the final result when it is available.  In addition, during May, Dr. Roger Grange will be presenting a paper at the Florida Anthropological Society meeting. The subject will be A Tale of Two Houses. He will be comparing a town house and a country house from the Turnbull settlement and what can be learned about the settlement based upon these two locations. Finally, Dot Moore has finished reports on recent test excavations on construction sites in New Smyrna Beach and has submitted these to the Florida Master Site File.
