 VOTE NO ON Y!

Stop the Gift of Santa Barbara Parkland to a Private Developer and Save Arroyo Burro Creek

Measure Y asks voters to approve the gift of City Parklands to a private developer. Giving away our parkland would set a dangerous precedent that threatens all of Santa Barbara Parks.

Don't be fooled by the developer! - Here are the Facts:
Measure Y development would cause permanent negative impacts to wildlife and would pollute Arroyo Burro Creek.

Measure Y authorizes the City to give away parkland so a private developer can build a bridge over one of the City's nicest creeks and build 25 luxury estates in beautiful open space along the ecologically-fragile creek near Hendrys Beach and the Douglas Family Preserve.

Creeks are significant wildlife movement corridors. Bridges can severely limit wildlife movement and migration, and lead to increased roadkill of wildlife moving and foraging along the creek. Bridges also create "dead zones" in creeks because of the lack of sunlight. Bridges attract homeless encampments and graffiti. During EDC's regular creek clean-ups the number one place we find trash, human feces, spray paint cans and hypodermic needles is under bridges. Pollution such as oil, grease, anti-freeze and brake fluid also runoff bridges and into creeks. These are just some of the reasons why bridges cause serious damage to creek ecosystems, and why you should vote No on Y.

Measure Y would:
  • Significantly damage Arroyo Burro Creek's habitat
  • Pollute the creek with trash, oil, fertilizers and pesticides
  • Threaten a recently discovered population of rare Western Pond Turtles
  • Worsen traffic congestion on Las Positas Rd between Highway 101 and Cliff Dr.
Why is this on the Ballot? The Urban Creeks Council and the Citizens Planning Association raised numerous concerns about this luxury estate development's impact on our environment. The city council refused to place the gift of public parkland to a vote of the people, as required by the City Charter. The groups took the City to court to enforce the Charter.

Who supports Measure Y? Veronica Meadows developer Mark Lee is the project's main advocate. If he is successful he will make millions of dollars.
