Dr. King marching for jobs and the vote!
Dr. Martin Luther King Day Parade
Voting Rights March Included!

Dear NAACP Members and Supporters,

As usual, the Monterey County Branch will be participating in this year's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade jointly organized by the Pan Hellenic Council and the City of Seaside.  We meet at Broadway and Noche Buena in Seaside at 11am Mon Jan 20th.  The march begins promptly at noon and the program at Oldemeyer Center begins at 1pm.

With the permission of the MLK Day Parade organizers, the NAACP will have voting rights signs, songs and chants to commemorate Dr. King's leadership on this issue and to acknowledge the new attack on voting rights in our own time.

50 years ago last August, Dr. King delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Two of the most tangible results of this era in the Civil Rights Movement was the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Six months ago, the US Supreme Court struck down section 4; the key enforcement provision of the Voting Rights Act.  This is the most ominous and severe set back for civil rights in this country in the last 50 years.

So come out and help us draw attention to the need to protect the rights for which Dr. King and too many others died.
