WANL Weekly
Sept 29, 2010 |
NEW: Nino Ricci to Kickoff WANL's Inaugural
Come From Away Reading Series This Sunday, October
3!
|
Celebrated
author Nino Ricci will read at The Ship Pub in St. John's on Sunday
October 3, and at Jennifer's Bar Room in Corner Brook on Monday
October 4, as part of the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland &
Labrador's new Come From Away Reading Series. Both evenings get
underway at 8:00 PM. Admission is free.
For
the Come From Away Reading Series, WANL asked three Newfoundland
writers the following question: "If you were to invite a writer
from another province to come read on the Rock, who would it be?"
They told us who they wanted, we invited them, and our first
celebrated CFA is on his way! Poet Randall Maggs invited
award-winning novelist Nino Ricci and will be introducing the
author in both St. John's and Corner Brook.
Randall Maggs is the award-winning author of Night Work: The
Sawchuk Poems, winner of the 2008 Winterset Award, the 2009
E.J. Pratt Poetry Prize and the Kobzar Literary Award 2010.
Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems follows the tragic
trajectory of the life and work of hockey legend Terry Sawchuk, a
dark driven genius of a goalie who survived twenty tough seasons in
an era of scant upper-body equipment and no player representation.
The collection is illustrated with photographs depicting key
moments in the career of Terry Sawchuk, his exploits and his agony.
Published by Brick Books in 2008, Night Work: The Sawchuk
Poems is now in its second printing.Randall Maggsis also
artistic director of the March Hare festival of music and
literature and he teaches literature at Sir Wilfred Grenfell
College, Memorial University, Corner Brook. He will be at The Ship
Pub in St. John's on October 3 and at Jennifer's Bar Room in Corner
Brook on October 4 to introduce Nino Ricci.
Nino Ricci's first novel was the internationally acclaimed
Lives of the Saints. It spent 75 weeks on the Globe
and Mail's bestseller list and was the winner of the F.G.
Bressani Prize, the Books in Canada First Novel Award, and
the Governor General's Award for Fiction. Published in seventeen
countries, Lives of the Saints was the first volume of a trilogy
that continued with In a Glass House, hailed as a "genuine
achievement" by The New York Times, and Where She Has
Gone, nominated for the Giller Prize. The Lives of the Saints
trilogy was adapted for a television miniseries starring Sophia
Loren and Kris Kristofferson.
Ricci's most recent novel is the national bestseller The Origin
of Species, which earned him the Canadian Authors Association
Fiction Award as well as his second Governor General's Award for
Fiction. Set in Montreal in 1980s, the novel casts a Darwinian eye
on the life of Alex Fratarcangeli, who is torn between his baser
impulses and his pursuit of the Good.
Nino Ricci was born in Leamington, Ontario, to parents from the
Molise region of Italy, and completed university studies in
Toronto, Montreal, and Florence, Italy. He is a past president of
the Canadian Centre of International PEN, a writers' human rights
organization that works for freedom of expression. He lives in
Toronto with his wife, writer Erika de Vasconcelos, and their
children. WANL is delighted to welcome Nino Ricci to the
Rock.
The Come From Away Reading Series gives the Writers' Alliance of
Newfoundland & Labrador the opportunity to ask writers from
here to let us know about writers they admire from elsewhere. WANL
is pleased to bring Randall Maggs and Nino Ricci together for this
exciting event.

Let
St. John's City Council know that we need a bigger investment in
arts and culture!
|
Last
year, the St. John's Arts Advisory Committee recommended that
Council double the 2010 budget for arts grants from $1.00 per
capita to $2.00 per capita. Council deferred the recommendation to
the following year, and now as discussion begins about the City's
2011 budget, it's time to let Council know that a greater
investment in the arts is important and necessary.
On September 28, 2009, St. John's City Council endorsed a new
document: Planning for a Creative Future: The City of St. John's
Municipal Arts Plan. The first strategic direction in this
important document - Financial Support of the Arts: Funding the
Future - acknowledges that arts grants are "a real investment in
the prosperity of the City as a whole" and prioritizes direct
investment from the City through arts grants. This document is an
important step toward greater involvement of the City in supporting
and helping to develop the arts here, but we need action in order
to make that vision a reality.
So get in touch with Council and let them know that doubling the
2011 budget for arts grants needs to be an active priority - not
just in a policy document but in the budget!

A
Dramatic Reading of Rig
|
Rising
Tide Theatre presents (a dramatic reading) of Rig
Written
by: Mike Heffernan
Adapted by: Joan Sullivan
On
the night of February 15th, 1982, the Ocean Ranger, the rig they
said they could never sink, toppled into the sea, creating one of
the worst tragedies in Newfoundland's history. There were no
survivors. The whole province mourned. We were gripped in a
sadness, an anger and a collective sense of pain. Mike Heffernan's
relative was on the rig that night. His book simply and eloquently,
in the words of those affected most, captures the many facets of
that terrible night and its aftermath. Joan Sullivan has edited his
book with sensitivity and an eye to juxtaposition.

NEW Call for Submissions - Zen-inspired
poetry
|
Matrix
Magazine
Matrix
Presents: ZEN-INSPIRED POETRY
Kado, or the
way of poetry, is one of the ways to satori, or enlightenment. The
observer steps away: the Zen poem celebrates "not the self or the
seer, but the world seen" (Sam Hamill). Zen aesthetics value
simplicity, naturalness, directness, and profundity. Attention to
the moment is one of its hallmarks. No other Asian form has so
intrigued and proliferated in the English-speaking world as the
Japanese haiku. Send us your Zen-inspired poems in forms that are
related or have been shaped by it such as haiku, tanka, haibun, and
the collaborative renku.
Please submit your work by 31 Oct 2010, one poem per page except
for haiku which may be 3 - 4 per page, to matrixzenpoetry@gmail.com, attention, the issue
editors: Mary di Michele & Susan Gillis. Electronic submissions
only, please!

Competition for Newfoundland and Labrador Youth
|
From
a press release from For the Love of Learning
ESSAY
COMPETITION OFFERS OPPORTUNITY FOR CAREER GUIDANCE TO NEWFOUNDLAND
AND LABRADOR YOUTH.
Newfoundland and Labrador high school students are offered the
opportunity to receive hands-on experience and insight into a
prospective career. For the Love of Learning's annual 'Future Looks
Bright' essay contest offers selected youth first hand experience
of a particular career and the academic path to it.
The non-profit is asking for essays from NL youth detailing why the
author would benefit from this unique opportunity, their
academic/career goals, and what obstacles (social, economic or
otherwise) they must overcome in reaching those goals. For the Love
of Learning's executive selects the winning essay.
The writer of the winning submission will be offered a week in St.
John's to career and school shadow in their field of interest. The
week will include sitting in on related post-secondary classes and
career shadowing with a professional in their chosen field.
Transportation and billeting will be provided by For the Love of
Learning, Inc.
Last year's winner was Cole Walsh, a 15 year old high school
student from Flower's Cove, NL who aspires to being a chemist. He
spent his week sitting in on Memorial University lectures,
participating in laboratory classes, assisting in a research
laboratory and meeting with department heads. Cole's week was
filled out with a tour of campus and a meeting with Academic
Advising. "It was phenomenal!" he wrote. "It really gave me clarity
in terms of what I want to do with my life and hopefully can do the
same for other youth like me. It was a once in a lifetime
chance."
Essays of 1000-1,500 words are requested and should be submitted to
the above address by January 3, 2011. For further information,
please see www.ftlol.org, or

NEW: 2010 Canadian
Tales of the Fantastic Short Story
Competition
|
Writers of short fiction are invited to enter the 2010 Canadian
Tales of the Fantastic Short Story Competition. To be considered, a
story must have two things. First, it must contain an element of
the Fantastic; second, it must be identifiably Canadian. An element
of the Fantastic is self-explanatory, but what is 'Identifiably
Canadian'? If the story is written by a Canadian, or written about
Canadians, or takes place in Canada, then it meets the
'Identifiably Canadian' condition.
The
contest closes December 31st, 2010. The entry fee is $15 for one
manuscript, $25 for two, or $30 for three.
First
place pays $500. Second place pays $150 and the third pays $100.
Ten Honourable mention prizes of
$25.00 will also be awarded. All winning entries will be published
by Red Tuque Books in the upcoming anthology, 'Canadian Tales Of
The Fantastic'. Winners will receive a complementary copy of the
anthology in addition to the prize money. Winners will be contacted
by February 28th, 2011. Results will posted on the Red Tuque Books
website in March, 2011.
