WCAC wraps up Annual Coat Drive
More than a warm coat, program supports steps to self-sufficiency
Worcester, Massachusetts - They say, timing is everything and for Worcester Community Action Council, Inc.'s annual Coat Drive for Kids, the timing couldn't have been more perfect. The agency was able to deliver new winter coats to all of the children enrolled in the agency's Head Start, Early Head Start and Healthy Families of Southern Worcester County, as well as provide for the children of teen parents enrolled in the agency's Job & Education Center just as the first true frost of the season arrived this week.

Thanks to sizable in-kind donations from National Grid (211 coats), Commerce Bank (109 coats) and Avalon Marlborough (45 coats), coupled with corporate donations from Bay State Savings Bank ($2,000), DCU for Kids ($1,500), UniBank ($1,000) and the TJX Companies ($1,000), WCAC was able to distribute 451 new winter coats.

"We are most grateful for the incredible generosity of those who donated coats to our drive and those who supported the effort with corporate contributions," said WCAC Executive Director Jill C. Dagilis. "We all know, all too well how harsh New England winters can be. Thanks to the community's generosity the youngsters we work with will be warm all winter long."

This is the tenth year WCAC has conducted the Coat Drive, established to alleviate the burden of buying a new winter coat for ever-growing youngsters for the vulnerable families WCAC serves. "This is so much more than a warm coat," Dagilis noted. " For many of our families a new winter coat is a purchase that just isn't manageable... leaving children at risk for catching cold, getting sick, missing school thus causing parents to miss work or school themselves. We are most grateful for the strong support in helping us help our families to take important steps towards self sufficiency."

Additionally, WCAC graciously accepted a donation of nearly 150 hats and mittens from National Grid's Community Outreach team, as well as handmade hats and mittens from the Worcester Senior Center's Knit for Fun Group.
