2017 World Canals Conference Comes to New York State
Attend for one day or experience the entire conference!
A world-class program that highlights some of the most exciting and innovative activities on the world's waterways
is set to take place Sept. 24-28 at the
2017 World Canals Conference (WCC 2017) in Syracuse.
The conference provides exceptional opportunities to learn from and network with the most forward-thinking experts in canalside development, waterway engineering and management, and canal tourism and preservation.
Registration is open for one-day or full conference attendance through Sept. 15.
Conference Highlights
- Formal presentations- Experience and learn from best practices from inland waterways of the U.S. and around the world. Ideas from Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Poland, the Netherlands and elsewhere will help New Yorkers plan for the next 200 years of a vibrant canal system.
- Daily study tours- Get a firsthand look at transformative projects along New York's canals. Within a 40-mile radius of Syracuse, conference participants will see the clean-up of Onondaga Lake, visit restored canal sites at Port Byron, Camillus and Chittenango, tour the Oswego Canal by boat, and learn about maintenance of the canal system today.
- Pre- and post-conference tours will take attendees east to the Champlain and Erie Canals and west along the Erie Canal to Buffalo. There are still a few spaces to join the tours, but don't delay!
- Free public events kick off the conference on Sunday, September 24, at Syracuse Inner Harbor and include canal schooner Lois McClure, Corning Museum of Glass GlassBarge, tours of Onondaga Lake, kayaking, educational displays, and more.
- Specialty foods and beverages from central New York are being showcased at the Public Event Day and Delegate Craft Brew Tasting (Sunday), Welcome Dinner (Monday), and Upstate Cookout in Baldwinsville (Wednesday).
- Water Way, a specially-curated exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art, will feature videos by youth from canal towns around the world exploring the continued cultural impact of canals on their lives. The program will be on view each night of the conference, projected on the façade of the Everson Museum.

community leaders, planners, waterway engineers and managers, canal tourism professionals, historians, educators, and canal enthusiasts.

Order Your Official World Canals Conference Poster
Order this special poster by Tong "Amy" Su celebrating the Erie Canal Bicentennial and the 2017 World Canals Conference. The poster is 11 x 17 inches and suitable for framing; it includes an information sheet on the Erie Canal on the reverse side. The poster is available for $20 thanks to our collaboration with the Syracuse Poster Project, a nonprofit working to bring art to everyday places in Syracuse. The Project brings together community poets and Syracuse University artists to create an annual series of illustrated poetry posters.
