Washburn County Economic Development Corporation
September 2017 Newsletter

Director's Notes
Dear Members,

This summer has been a busy summer for the Washburn County Economic development Corporation and the fall isn't slowing down.  As you can see from the following newsletter, there is a lot going on for you, our members to participate in as well.

We've been working hard to schedule some helpful workshops for business owners in the area to benefit from.  While the newsletter is a good place to find this information, I also make sure to put the information as it becomes available on our Facebook page.  If you use Facebook, it would be a nice way to receive prompt information from us.

One of the barriers to people moving to our county has been finding housing in the area.  There are many platforms people use to advertise their rental properties, but some of those methods are not easily accessible or easy to find for those moving from out of the area.  We've created a new page on our website dedicated rental housing in Washburn County and are developing a page for Washburn County area job postings.  Wouldn't it be great to have a one stop shop for those wanting to move to the area?  We hope to make the whole process easier.  Below is a link for landlords to be able to submit their listing to the WCEDC to post on the page.  I'll keep you updated on the progress of our job posting page as soon as it is ready to go live.

Finally, please take note of the Governor's Northern Economic Summit which will be held at Heartwood next month.  This should be a good event to network with others in the Northern part of our State as well as learning what's happening in our communities.

I look forward to seeing you around as I continue to visit businesses, and I urge to touch base with me if you are looking to start, expand, or move your business to the area.  In addition, if there are other seminar/workshop topics that you would find helpful to have, I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Kind regards,

Joel Zimmerman

Government Contracting Opportunities for Small Businesses

The Government buys pretty much everything - from military vehicles, tree planting services, office furniture, plumbing services, facility maintenance and IT support. Over the last two fiscal years, every county in Wisconsin has recorded sales to the Federal government. Sales have been to a broad range of agencies from the US Forest Service, USDA, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Department of Defense and many more. State of Wisconsin (and other States) as well as Local Governments also purchase a wide range of goods and services. In addition, there are also opportunities to subcontract.
This session will be presented by the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and Wisconsin Procurement Institute (WPI). This session is designed as an introduction for small businesses who are considering selling to the government market or those just starting to review and look for opportunities.

What you will learn:
  · Benefits of being a small business
  · How to find government opportunities
  · How to sell products and services to the government
  · Financial resources and assistance
