Volunteer Work Day and Safe Removal Technique Workshop
April 7 - 9, 2017
Camp Whitsett

Another fantastic work day with a new learning experience built in! In exchange for our tree work at Camp Whitsett, the West LA Boy Scouts will make a large financial contribution to The Britton Fund, Inc.  Our focus this year is safe removal techniques.  We need tree workers and ground workers, as well as lead instructors.  Interested in being an instructor?  Contact Andy Trotter at 714-920-1262.

Safe Removal Technique Workshop
Participants in the workshop will have the Hands-On opportunity to work with skilled instructors learning the basic safe removal standards and proper felling cuts.  For those looking for advanced rigging and removal skills will be put on crews that will specialize in those types of removals.  At the end of the day the volunteers will be removing approximately 120 beetle-killed trees at Camp Whitsett in the southern Sierra mountains.

In addition, we will be doing our best to recover as many logs as possible.  A crew of woodworkers will be using a Woodmizer (or two) to prepare lumber and turning the slabs into something usable for the camp.

Equipment needed
Bucket trucks, loaders, sawmills, whole tree chippers. If you're able to bring any of these types of large equipment please contact Andy Trotter to organize.

Please bring chainsaws ropes, rigging gear, saw chaps and all other PPE

ANSI z133 requirements will be required and enforced during the weekend

Recall Announcement
STIHL Recalls 100,000 Chainsaws
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of 100,000 STIHL chainsaw that are at risk of fire and burn hazards.  The saws being recalled are:
  • MS 461
  • MS 461 R
  • MS 461 R Rescue
  • GS 461 Rock Boss
The first two are often used by firefighters. The last two were not included in STIHL's official recall notice but a company representative at the STIHL recall office confirmed they are also on the list. STIHL Inc. has received 117 reports of pinched or leaking fuel lines but the company reports they are unaware of any damage or injuries caused by the possible defect.  Recalled chainsaws have a serial number between 173092800 and 181993952 under the front hand guard on the engine housing's sprocket side.  The models affected were sold for approximately $1,000 from July 2012 through December 2016.  The recommendation is that owners of the saws immediately stop using them and take them to an authorized STIHL dealer for a free inspection and repair.

Click Here for the official CPSC recall notice.  The STIHL website has a list of seven recalls for various products.
