Join WCISA for our Annual Volunteer Work Day.  

Our volunteer arborists' provide free tree work in exchange for a $15,000 donation to 
The Britton Fund! 

Tree work will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5th with optional prep work on Friday, Nov. 4th. For this special weekend we have coordinated free camping on Pixie Woods property, so come and enjoy a fun filled weekend with your family and friends. Our Sunday morning event will be a catch/release fishing experience.

Pixie Woods is a city-run amusement park geared toward children ages 1-6. Opened in 1954, Pixie Woods is Stockton's own fairyland for the "young in age and the young at heart." It will be closed to the public during our work day.

Volunteers Needed for Statewide Tree Planting

WCISA has partnered with Invest from the Ground Up once again for a new state-wide tree planting event, CIRCLE.  The California Initiative to Reduce Carbon and Limit Emissions (CIRCLE) will take place in nine cities across California.  

Volunteer arborists are needed at each site to provide planting guidance to general volunteers.

2016 North American Tree Climbing Championship

This year's North American Tree Climbing Championship (NATCC) was held on October 1 and 2, 2016 and was hosted by the Niagara Parks and the Ontario Chapter of International Society of Arboriculture.  Forty-nine of the top professional tree climbers from the United States and Canada took part and demonstrated their skills as professional arborists, all while competing for the title of North American Champion. 

Congratulations to Jacob Claassen for placing second in the preliminary events and third overall at the North American Tree Climbing Championship.

Climbing Skills Workshop with A Plus Tree, Inc.

This workshop will provide tree care professionals with affordable hands-on training by volunteer instructors that have numerous years of field and competition experience. Climbers will increase their enjoyment and productivity, become more confident and efficient and gain skills with new tricks and tips with a 6 to 1 ratio with instructors.

From entry level to intermediate, this program will offer information and training for all levels. All participants will learn the latest innovative techniques from skilled and qualified climbers. 

Climbing Stations:
  • Learn to climb - Understand your equipment and knots
  • Setting your climbing line - Practice your throw line
  • Methods of entry - Footlock, body thrust, self belay, etc.
  • Planning & Workclimb - Maneuvers, limb walk, and safety

Urban Wood: From Trees to Furniture

This conference provides arborists, municipal partners and woodworkers with information about the utilization of urban lumber for making fine furniture. Reuse of wood allows for longer carbon storage times and helps reduce carbon loss to the atmosphere. This seminar will provide information about how to utilize urban species for lumber, which species to utilize, how to design projects with urban lumber species and how to mill and prepare urban trees for harvest and utilization as lumber.

In this workshop we will introduce trees found on the campus of California  State University, Chico (CSUC). We will talk about the key characteristics of their  leaves, bark and reproductive structures (either cones or flowers). We will also  provide information about the tree biology, pruning and urban forest management.   We will walk around the campus and identify trees, collect specimen and bring  them back to the lab for examination and review. Herbarium specimens will also  be available. Worksheets and tree identification resources will also be provided.
