BMPs for tree care to enhance birds-wildlife

Tree care and urban forestry professionals! The arboriculture and wildlife communities in California are working together to develop ways to enhance habitat through tree care practices. Would you review the draft Best Management Practices (BMPs) developed by this group? Would you also forward this to other colleagues, who have expertise in bird and wildlife habitat enhancement and regulation?

The BMPs are currently in a "framework" format, attached and also posted at http://treecareforbirds.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Framework-and-BMPs-Packet-4.29.16.pdf.  These specific graphics may or may not be used in the final BMP document but are important in guiding the structure and key decisions in the BMPs. The next step will be to transform the BMPs into text that is parallel to other BMPs for the tree care industry, and invitations will be extended this fall for their review.

We have set up a review period through JUNE 10.  Please send questions and comments to Ryan Gilpin, at HortScience Inc., ryan@hortscience.com or call him at 925.484.0211. We also invite you to join us in a teleconference call on May 25, 10:00 am, call 605-475-4875 code 434627#.  Ryan gave a presentation these BMPs on May 4, at the Western Chapter of the International Society for Arboriculture, and his 34-minute presentation and voice-over are posted at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUFXv-9nIZY.

Please send comments on whether the draft BMP elements would:
  • Allow for tree care during and beyond nesting season?
  • Require reasonable modifications in tree care practices?
  • Enhance habitat for urban birds and other wildlife?
[What changes would you recommend in these BMPs?]

Workshops were held in July, October, February and May to outline a collaborative approach and draft Best Management Practices (BMPs). Parallel to developing these BMPs, the three-year project is developing training and certification for tree care workers and public education materials. Other project information can be found at http://treecareforbirds.com If you'd like to be added to the contact list, please send an email message to Gillian Martin at gm99oliver@cox.net.
