      STORIES OF THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

Chase Painting on Loan

William Merritt Chase's The Young Orphan (1890) is on loan as one of the highlights of the major William Merritt Chase retrospective.

The exhibition opened at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, where it will be on view from June 4 to September 11, 2016. It will continue on with tours to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from October 9, 2016 to January 16, 2017, and Ca'Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice later in 2017. The painting was chosen as the cover image on the exhibition catalogue.

Chase was an American painter and exponent of Impressionism, a founder of the Chase School (later known as Parsons the New School for Design), and an Academician elected to full standing in 1890. The painting, which may depict a resident of the orphanage located near Chase's downtown NYC studio, is one of the gems of the Academy's Permanent Collection.

Our Collection by the Numbers

Did you know that the National Academy Permanent Collection is comprised of over 7,700 works?
  • 2,200 paintings
  • 5,000 works on paper
  • 350 sculptures
  • Growing holdings of architectural models, photography, and new media
Over 1,000 works in the collection are artist portraits. Until 1994, National Academicians were required to donate one portrait to the collection.

The oldest dated work in the collection is an 1816 sculpture bust of the American history painter John Trumbull by artist Pietro Cardelli. The Academy's seven newest works were all created in 2013, and include four paintings, one print, one architectural model, and one mixed media piece.

Spotlight on the Stephen Steigman Young Artists Program

To better serve our youth from a variety of backgrounds, and to broaden the diversity of aspiring artists growing up in our community, the Stephen Steigman Fund for Young Artists program was launched in January 2015. It currently offers full merit scholarships to 19 jury-selected middle school students.

The program brings an extraordinarily talented and artistically curious group of young artists in contact with the resources of the teachers and courses at the National Academy School.

Students develop skills in drawing, painting, digital photography, and a variety of other media. Lessons include working from observation, live models, and from the imagination.

Students also receive assistance assembling portfolios for admission to competitive-entry schools. Some of our students have already been accepted to schools such as LaGuardia High School and the High School of Art and Design!

Creative Mischief:
Annual School Show Wows Visitors for 5th Year

Beginning with a packed house on opening night, over 2,000 visitors traveled through the museum and school galleries from May 18-29 to view the 5th annual Creative Mischief exhibit. More than 220 works were on display, drawn from the talented portfolios of the Academy School's faculty, students, and alumni.

The works on display represented a variety of mediums taught at the school, from painting, sculpture and drawing, to video art, performance art and mixed-media installations. According to School Director Maurizio Pellegrin,  "Those chosen to exhibit in this show are all committed to profound work and this show enables us to witness their research and constant exploration."

Current Exhibit: Visit the Academy School's Sonia Gechtoff Gallery from June 6 to July 17 to view the Creative Mischief Faculty and Staff Exhibition.

Select works from the Creative Mischief show are on display, so if you missed the May Creative Mischief exhibition, now is a perfect time to stop by and view the intriguing selection of art.
