An advance party of about 100 Fort Campbell soldiers arrived in Liberia over the weekend as part of the ongoing efforts to stop the spread of the Ebola virus. A pentagon spokesman says that brings the total number of American boots on the ground to about 565. U.S. troops will build 17 treatment centers and military blood labs in Liberia. The new blood labs will reduce wait times on test results from several days to several hours. In all, around 700 troops from the 101st Airborne Division will deploy to Liberia. Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway is among those scheduled to stop at Fort Campbell next week for a town hall meeting. According to a news release from Conway's office, Conway, along with Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery, and Holly Petraeus, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Office of Service Member Affairs, will conduct a media conference and attend a town hall style meeting to discuss consumer protection issues with Fort Campbell soldiers and their families. A military construction program begun in Fiscal Year 2010 to replace aging Department of Defense Education Activity schools, will replace Marshall Elementary School, at Fort Campbell. However, because the new facility will be built on the same site as the current school, the school will close temporarily at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. The nearly 500 students from Marshall will be moved to the five remaining elementary schools, which will result in some redistricting of students. Parents and sponsors will be provided with school assignments and detailed school bus routes and schedules in the spring of 2015. |
