Message from Principal Benzie

Good morning,

Over the past two weeks, Wayland Middle School has been in a celebratory mood. First, we celebrated World Languages Week. The goal of the week was to expose students to the linguistic and cultural diversity of our community and the world. Each day we celebrated a different language, wearing representative colors and eating specially prepared foods from the area.
  • Monday - "Where you're from, where you've been or where you'd like to go" Day (wear something that shows where your family comes from, from a place you visited or somewhere you'd like to go)
  • Tuesday - French Day (blue, white and red)
  • Wednesday - Chinese Day (red)
  • Thursday - Latin Day (purple and gold) (during Wellness Week)
  • Friday - Spanish Day (red and yellow) (during Wellness Week)
Teachers shared their own "learning a language" stories in the classrooms. Also on Monday, the PTO sponsored a cultural enrichment assembly, Golden Gates with Moscow Nights, a singing/dancing/music group from St. Petersburg, Russia. Due to the snow days, we were unable to have our parent volunteers come into school to conduct their annual special International Parent Workshops. However, we were able to reschedule the 8 th  grade students teaching language classes to our 6 th  grade students! Fun events happened daily as well: trivia contest; Language buttons; special guest lunch servers and WLWK decorations.

Our second celebration was our 8 th  annual Wellness Week! The focus of our Wellness Week are the 7 dimensions of wellness are listed and defined below, but here are some examples:
  • a student picks up trash in the hallway and throws it out. Environmental wellness.
  • a student invites another student to sit with them at lunch. Belonging, social wellness.
  • eating non-processed foods for snack or lunch- physical wellness.
  • a students steps outside of their comfort zone in your class to participate. emotional wellness.
  • a student who shows a love for school and your class. occupational wellness.
Each day, the Wellness department brought in guest speakers ranging from Cross-Fit and physical therapists to yoga instructors. To find out more about our volunteers, please check out the  Wellness Blog .

Thank you to our PTO, parent volunteers, guest speakers, performers and most of all, our teachers for putting together two awesome weeks of fun and learning!

Warm regards,
George

 Student Placement Requests
Deadline: Friday, May 1

Considerable thought and effort are given to student scheduling here at WMS. It is a highly complex, intricate, and time-consuming process. Parents may make specific placement requests under the following circumstances:
  • If you have concerns about a teacher based on an older sibling's experience, you may request a different teacher for your child. You may not, however, request a specific teacher.
  • If your child has had difficulty with a specific student which has negatively impacted your child's ability to learn, you may request that the children be placed in separate clusters.
Please know that we will not be considering requests from parents to place students together this year. P lacement requests must be sent to  [email protected] no later than FRIDAY, MAY 1st . Please include your child's first and last name, and grade in September 2018. Although we will work hard to honor your request, we cannot make any guarantees.
Is Your Email Address Current in eSchool HAC?

Important communications from the Principal and teachers about school events, progress reports and report cards are now being sent to parent and guardian email addresses via eSchool. If you have changed your email address or phone numbers during the school year, please be sure to update your information in HAC. Bus Driver & Crossing Guard Appreciation Breakfast
Wednesday, March 21, 9:00 - 10:00 am
Loker School Cafeteria

Join Wayland's PTO boards as we thank our bus drivers and crossing guards for all that they do to get our students safely to and from where they need to go. Whether your child walks to school, rides the bus, plays sports, or has enjoyed a field trip on the bus - we couldn't do it without these folks! This year the Loker Elementary School is hosting the event, and there are three ways that you can help:

● Volunteer to help at the breakfast by donating food, supplies or time on March 21 st
We are now using Signup.com (formerly Volunteer Spot). Visit our link, review the options and choose the spot(s) that you would like at:  http://signup.com/go/bxwQYun.
You will not need to register an account or keep a password to sign up.

● You or your student can write a personal thank you note to your bus driver or crossing guard. These can be dropped off in the elementary school offices by the end of the school day on Thursday, March 15 th .

● Consider a $10 donation, instead, to help offset the cost of the breakfast and the simple gift bags for each driver/guard. Please make a check payable to "Wayland PTO" and drop them off at the Elementary School Offices or contact Nina Ching at  [email protected]  for information on where to send them.
